The way Michelle Hanks of Seven Steps Up and Courtyard Concerts sees it, the summer of 2022 offers an opportunity to regale West Michigan music lovers with uniquely curated, outdoor entertainment as the concert world begins to recover from a suffocating COVID pandemic.
So, the second year of Courtyard Concerts’ Free Friday Night Summer Concerts at Grand Haven’s Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium offers up a sundry mix of international touring artists and regional favorites, starting June 17 with Minneapolis alt-pop band Yam Haus.
“We are looking to create a unique summer concert series with artists that attendees won’t find at other summer concert series, giving them a reason to come to Grand Haven,” said Hanks.

In that vein, the series — which runs through Sept. 2 — boasts legendary names such as singer-songwriters Kim Richey and Willy Porter, and guitarist Albert Lee, along with Michigan-based stars Drew Nelson, Peter “Madcat” Ruth and Kaitlin Rose.
Just as in its inaugural 2021 season, the concerts are free, open to the public and begin at 6:15 p.m. Fridays, with local/regional artists opening the shows.
Hosted by the nonprofit Courtyard Concerts, the concerts are produced by Seven Steps Up, Third Coast Recording Co. and OnCore AV with grant support from the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.
“We had a good turnout,” Hanks said of the 2021 shows, “but room for more!”
The Grand Haven series is just the tip of the musical iceberg when it comes to free community concerts ramping up across West Michigan for summer 2022:
• Lowell’s crowd-attracting Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts series will return in mid-June and runs Thursday nights through late August on The Riverwalk Plaza with a roster of perennially popular artists, including Mungion, The Accidentals, Luke Winslow-King, Jake Kershaw and The Kari Lynch Band.

• Sparta resumes its “Concerts in Rogers Park” on Wednesdays this summer, starting with The Vinyl Bandits on June 1. Other well-known performers include Valentiger, Serita’s Black Rose, Fast Hands Band, The Accidentals and Roosevelt Diggs.
• Kentwood’s Thursday series taking place behind Kentwood City Hall boasts appearances by The Soul Syndicate, Cabildo, Max Lockwood, The Moxie Strings, Brena and more — starting June 16 and running through Aug. 11.
In addition, Battle Creek, Big Rapids, Bridgman, Grand Ledge, Hastings, Holland, Lakeview, Ludington, Manistee, Parchment, Roscommon, St. Joseph, Silver Lake, Walker and Whitehall also have announced the return of summer concerts.
