IRMA THOMAS
THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA
PRESERVATION HALL LEGACY QUINTET
When: 7:30 p.m. Monday
Tickets: $40 for individual tickets, if available
Where: Forest Hills Fine Arts Center, 600 Forest Hill Ave. SE
New Orleans “soul queen” Irma Thomas is a Grammy-winning singer and member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame who deftly handles blues, R&B and gospel. Her first recording, “Don’t Mess With My Man” in 1960 reached the Billboard R&B chart and she’s been on stage ever since. A year later, Preservation Hall opened in The Big Easy and this quintet features alumni of its famous band: Gregg Stafford on trumpet, Freddie Lonzo on trombone, Joe Lastie Jr. behind the drum kit, Calvin Johnson playing the reeds, and Christopher Vaughn on keys.
Gospel group The Blind Boys Of Alabama has a history stretching back before World War II, playing primarily to black church audiences. In the early 1980s, then the Five Blind Boys of Alabama was tabbed to play Oedipus (as a group) in an award-winning musical theater production, “The Gospel At Colonus,” and the group’s time of wider fame began. Today, four blind singers are joined on stage by four musicians to carry on the gospel tradition. These three acts are touring together under the Columbia Artists umbrella, and the FHFAC show tops off their Mitten State weekend which began in Detroit.

JANET JACKSON
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: $29.50-$99.50; add $20 for aisle seating
Where: Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids
Before there was Beyonce, there was Janet Jackson.
Now, the singer is bringing her “State Of The World” tour to Grand Rapids. With 11 CD releases, Janet Jackson stands on a mountain of pop music that, combined with acting and dancing, puts her at a summit with adoring fans. Jackson is 51 and gave birth to her first child, a son, in January, and reviewers in tour cities have been marveling at her quick return to energetic performances in a video- and dance-oriented show. Adam Graham, pop music critic for The Detroit News, said Jackson “appeared refreshed and somewhat relaxed” at her Little Caesers Arena show on Sunday. He described a production that starts out with the most depressing social trends of today but quickly veers into a party atmosphere, featuring a string of Jackson hits from the 1980s and 1990s. Set lists from earlier shows indicated that Jackson is delivering about 25 songs, including “Nasty” and “Rhythm Nation.” Plenty of tickets are available here.
LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
BLUE WATER RAMBLERS WSG PETE BARDOLPH
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
The perfect post-Halloween celebration. Blue Water Ramblers is quite literally a folk institution in the Grand Rapids area, creating fetching harmony-laden originals that not only pay tribute to the great folk tradition but also to the great state of Michigan. And the band’s appearance for the Local Spins Wednesdays series has become an annual late October/early November tradition.
This time, the ramblers are bringing a special guest: well-known Grand Rapids musician Pete Bardolph. It all signals a marvelous night of folk-hued music in an intimate setting.
As always, there will be Michigan beer specials on tap, with free parking in the lot on Monroe Avenue NW kitty-corner from SpeakEZ Lounge. Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge and WYCE.
COLIN HAY
BRIAN VANDERARK
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: $35-$65
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
Colin Hay first made a splash as frontman for Australia’s Men at Work (1981’s “Down Under”) but his solo catalog is considerably larger and more robust than that short-lived but popular group. Hay has released more than a dozen solo albums since the late 1980s, with his most recent album, “Fierce Mercy,” being described as “an epic, cinematic step forward” for a guy who’s admired “for his intimate, confessional shows.”
Opening the Grand Rapids tour stop will be West Michigan’s own Brian Vander Ark, who similarly made a splash as frontman for alt-rock’s The Verve Pipe, but who’s gone on to enjoy success as a solo artist, too. Get tickets and details online at 20monroelive.com.

Where: Creston Brewery, 1504 Plainfield Ave. NE, Grand Rapids
Songteller Sessions sprang from the brain of Grand Rapids singer-songwriter Nicholas James Thomasma.

Well, we’ll learn the answer to that question on Thursday when the first Songteller Session occurs at Creston Brewery. A native of Plainwell, Lexi Adams will be joined by longtime GR guitarist and singer Ralston Bowles, and, of course, Thomasma.

PERIPHERY
ANIMALS AS LEADERS
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $25 advance, $29 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: Be the first person to email john@localspins.com with “PERIPHERY” in the subject field and you could win two tickets to see Periphery and Animals as Leaders at The Intersection. Check The Big List every week for your chance to win concert tickets.
Washington D.C.’s Periphery earned a Grammy Award nomination for the track “The Price is Wrong” from the acclaimed prog-metal band’s most recent album, 2016’s “Periphery III: Select Difficulty,” which has been described as the group’s most diverse recording yet.
The band has paired up with fellow D.C.-ites Animals As Leaders for what is being dubbed “The Convergence Tour.” Animals As Leaders is considered one of the preeminent bands in the “djent” scene, which Wikipedia says is known for its “distinctive high-gain, distorted, palm-muted low-pitch guitar sound.” The band released its most recent album, “The Madness of Many,” late last year and it jumped to No. 1 on the U.S. Hard Rock chart.
Also on the bill for this all-ages Grand Rapids show: Car Bomb. Doors open at 6 p.m.; get tickets and details online here.

The “Plan B” concert is a fund-raiser for Planned Parenthood. Get more information online at pyramidschemebar.com, where you can also get details about Saturday’s show featuring The Wrecks, Vesperteen, The Technicolors and The Great Indoors, $12 advance, $15 day of show.
BIGFOOT BUFFALO CD-RELEASE SHOW
When: 9 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $5
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids roots rock band Bigfoot Buffalo has created what group members say is their most impressive studio recording yet. “The Sun Is The Moon” was recorded at Ben Zito’s Centennial Sound studio in Grand Rapids and resonates with the sort of jam-band-hued, rootsy rock that this group led by chief songwriter Kyle Brown has long unfurled. And with drummer Charlie Merkel leaving the group late this year to move to Peru, this is the last chance for Grand Rapids fans to embrace this lineup of the group.
Also on the bill will be Flexadecibel and Conrad Shock & The Noise, making this a stellar local music showcase. Get more info on the Tip Top’s Facebook event page, where you can also find details about Saturday’s return of White Rabbit, with special guest Barrel Bones, $7.

REGINA SPEKTOR

Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
Anyone who’s seen Regina Spektor perform live wouldn’t be surprised that this Grand Rapids solo show was a quick sellout. Spektor’s unique voice, commanding stage presence and creative indie-pop (or anti-folk) approach has turned many heads since she first burst onto the scene back in 2001 with her debut album, “11:11.”
She’s touring behind her most recent and seventh album, 2016’s “Remember Us To Life,” which Pitchfork says “takes the unabashed earnestness that has always marked her music and rewrites it in a somber, minor key.”
The concert is presented by WYCE-FM; doors open at 7 p.m.
NEIL JACOBS
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $25-$35
Where: Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake
World-class acoustic guitarist Neil Jacobs is a West Michigan gem and there are plenty of West Michiganders who may not realize that this master of the 12-string guitar is one of our own. Based in the Grand Haven area, Jacobs has toured the globe with his world music-influenced songs and performances, with his 2001 release, “American Gypsy,” in particular, earning widespread praise for its take on the gypsy music of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. His 2014 album, “The Peasant Sabbatical,” builds on that with original compositions influenced by Balkan, gypsy and Celtic music.
This may be the perfect venue to soak up Jacobs’ music. Get tickets and more details about this intimate listening room show online at pindropconcerts.com.
