West Michigan's music scene
As it turns out, Double JJ Resort and Ranch in Rothbury won’t be silent this weekend after all.
Campers at the West Michigan ranch who pay an extra $150 to get into the inaugural “Sherwood Forest” event will be treated to sets by dozens of regional DJs and electronic music artists as part of an “appreciation weekend” on Friday and Saturday.
The music — including sets by Fendz, Goodsex, Sloth, Dean Martian, Willy Wompa and many more — unfurls the same weekend originally designated for the mammoth Electric Forest, which was canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s not Electric Forest by any means, but it is the locals who hold it down strong every year in the RV section,” the event’s Facebook page proclaimed last week, with Electric Forest tweeting that “this event is not hosted by or affiliated with Electric Forest festival or Forest HQ.”
Principal organizer Ryan A. Lohss told Local Spins that Sherwood Forest is “not a festival: It’s 300 campsites which is less then 0.05 percent of the Electric Forest and also the ranch’s normal camping capacity year-round which has been full the last four weeks with campers anyway.”
Double JJ Ranch is hosting the event, which hired Lohss and his Dial Up Productions LLC “to play music for them almost wedding-style all day. I’m not a big fan of doing things like that, so out of a tiny budget, I called all my friends that have been partying with us Forest locals over the last nine years in the RV section to come out and have some fun at the ranch during this crazy off year.
“In no way is this a festival, but there will be three sound areas with West Michigan DJs playing a variety of tunes, mostly house or head-bobbing stuff.”
As of Sunday afternoon, there were about three dozen campsites left for the weekend “and the ranch was sectioning off camping areas in the big field and building extra hand-sanitizer stations — pretty much going the extra mile to make sure everyone will be distanced and safe.”
Camping is $200, with $150 for the Sherwood Forest event. Get details online here.
That’s not all, of course. As live music continues to creep back into West Michigan, here’s this week’s Not-So-Big List Concert Guide. If your venue or your band has a live, in-person performance to add to this concert listing, email the information to john@localspins.com.
