Let’s just say Skillet’s Saturday tour stop at Grand Rapids’ GLC Live at 20 Monroe was filled with songs that perfectly described the weekend of live music across West Michigan.
The Christian metal/hard rock band’s 18-song set included titles such as “Better Than Drugs,” “Rebirthing,” “Feel Invincible,” “Awake and Alive,” “Scream,” “Psycho in My Head” and “Monster.” (Full set list here.)
The concert — with opening sets by Escape the Fate and Autumn Kings — came the same night that a bevy of doom/sludge/stoner metal bands rattled the rafters at The Pyramid Scheme a few blocks away, a lineup that included Leather Lung, Crystal Spiders, Lungburner and more.
On Sunday, the fan-fomenting action continued with metalcore/bimbocore’s Scene Queen, aka California-based Hannah Rose Collins, who brought her “Metalicious” tour to The Intersection in Grand Rapids with Wargasm and Bailey Spinn. (Scene Queen plays Detroit’s St. Andrew’s Hall on Wednesday.)
Kalamazoo, meanwhile, featured the multi-act Monkfest at Old Dog Tavern on Sunday, hosted by Montague’s indie pop-rock/British-rock’s Monkbirds. Local Spins’ Derek Ketchum described the afternoon and evening thus:
“An incredible Sunday of music. Artists throughout West Michigan were represented, featuring everything from singer-songwriter to alt-country to indie-punk. The only downside to the day, more people should have been there. A great blend of covers and original tunes from those kicking off the day to The Monkbirds who performed their first full band set in Kalamazoo. If you like artists such as The Beatles or Oasis, give them a listen. Closing out the night on the heavier side: punk rock’s WolfBite from Grand Rapids and Rueful Noise from Lansing.”
