West Michigan's music scene
In many ways, this has been “the lost summer” when it comes to concerts and festivals, thanks to the coronavirus outbreak.
But the unprecedented situation has also spawned some unique new offerings as promoters and venues look for ways to safely present live music, with a couple of those brand new series kicking off this week in the Grand Rapids area.
First up, the Comprehensive Therapy Center in Grand Rapids will launch its weekly “Driveway Concert Series” on Tuesday, with singer-songwriter Nicholas James Thomasma performing for 90 minutes on a driveway near Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park with organizers encouraging donations from attendees to the nonprofit center that serves children with disabilities but has been hit hard by the pandemic.
Attendees must register for the show online here, where they can also get more information and a full schedule of upcoming concerts featuring Chris Andrus, The Bozung Boys, Chris Bursley, West Michigan Opera Project and more. Attendees should bring a chair, snacks and mask.
And on Thursday, Studio Park and Listening Room in downtown Grand Rapids host their first-ever outdoor concert on the piazza off Oakes St. SW. Michigan singer-songwriter Luke Winslow-King will perform the inaugural 8 p.m. Thursday show, with Hayes Griffin and Nate Roberts opening.
Tickets are $35 each and, due to social-distancing requirements, must be purchased in batches of four tickets. Get details, tickets online here. The next “Listening Lawn” show takes place July 30, starring Grand Rapids’ Asamu Johnson & The Associates of the Blues.
Check out the rest of this week’s concert guide below. Also, Michigan artists and festivals continue to lean on live-stream performances that allow fans to experience music from the safety of their own homes. Find some of those online here.
As usual, we encourage those attending in-person concerts to wear masks, social-distance, wash their hands and follow guidelines as recommended by health officials. (Purchase a Local Spins bandana/face covering here and help Local Spins keep rolling: Local Spins Gift Shop.)
If your business or your band has a live, in-person performance to add to this concert listing, email the information to john@localspins.com.
