Formed in 1987, Arizona’s Gin Blossoms continue to tour behind catchy alt-rock/pop (“Hey Jealousy,” “Follow You Down,” “Found Out About You,” “Allison Road”) and now the band has a new album, “Mixed Reality,” set for release on June 15.

The kickoff to the 2018 Meijer Gardens summer concert series features the return of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks and their incredible band, aka the Tedeschi Trucks Band, which always rolls out dynamic vocals, stellar guitar-playing and rollicking jams. Charlie Parr, a country blues artist on the Red House Records label, opens the show. (The blues- and rock-fired Tedeschi Trucks Band is one of several shows the group is playing across the country before launching its “Wheels of Soul” tour with Drive-By Truckers and the Marcus King Band starting in late June.)
This show also features the debut of a revamped amphitheater: Meijer Gardens has completely renovated the upper portion of the venue to create 410 permanent folding seats for sponsors and VIPs, changing the look of the amphitheater dramatically. Local Spins proudly presents the return of Lighting Matches, aka the singer-songwriter duo of Matt Plessner and Rachel White with their band. Plessner and White each released solo albums in 2016 (Rachel’s debut EP “Destination Sunday” and Matt’s 5th album “Forest Blue”) and both were nominated for 2017 Jammie Awards. Backed by Eric Locke on drums and Adam Parada on keyboards and bass, they plan to release an album as Lighting Matches in 2018.

This 20 Monroe Live show sold out quickly, so clearly there’s still a lot of fan devotion for this Califorrnia alt-rock/metal band that got its start way back in 1991. Incubus – Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger, Jose Pasillas, Chris Kilmore and Ben Kenney – continues to tour behind its 2017 album, “8,” with the band following its Grand Rapids stop with appearances in Columbus and Cincinnati.

Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo has long made a fun spectacle out of the opening of its Beer Garden every summer. And while Kalamazoo’s own Greensky Bluegrass has been the star attraction in past years, the progressive bluegrass band is now hosting its own festival the same weekend. (See Camp Greensky below.) So, Bell’s instead is celebrating three straight days/nights with a mix of entertainment, starting with a sold-out show starring Phillip Phillips, who has a new album, “Collateral.”

Welcome to one of Michigan’s newest music festivals, this one hosted by a band that’s VERY familiar with the festival scene: Kalamazoo’s Greensky Bluegrass. The progressive bluegrass favorites have assembled an incredible lineup for a first-year event, with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Mike Gordon of Phish, Trampled By Turtles, The Wood Brothers, Billy Strings, Fruition, Rayland Baxter, May Erlewine, Marc Benevento, The War & Treaty, Joshua Davis, Cris Jacobs Band and The Go Rounds. And of course, GSBG will be lighting up the stage more than once over the weekend. The festival is being held in a familiar place: the Hoxeyville festival grounds outside Wellston in the Manistee National Forest.

Rescheduled from March 31, when the band originally was scheduled to play the venue, the BoDeans bring their charming roots rock to 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids after releasing “Thirteen” last year. The Wisconsin-bred band’s straightforward-yet-catchy approach has served them well over a 35-year career with Kurt Neumann still at the helm, though band co-founder Sam Llanas is no longer part of the picture, having quit the band in 2011.

This historic celebration has long enticed thousands of West Michiganders to sample food from booths operated by a variety of local nonprofit organizations and, best of all, musical performances by local bands and dance groups. One of West Michigan’s biggest country music celebrations, hosted by radio station B93, undergoes some big changes this year. Not only has the B93 Birthday Bash moved from the US131 Motorsports Park in Martin to Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, but it’s been cut back to a one-day affair.
Nevertheless, country stars abound, with scheduled performances by Rascal Flatts, Gary Allan, Morgan Evans, Devin Dawson and Tyler Rich. Get more information online at b93.iheart.com.
