Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown is just a fun name for a superstar lineup of New Orleans favorites, so it’s no wonder this show sold out quickly. Anyone who’s seen Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue’s high-energy funk/jazz/R&B spectacle knows why this band has attracted devoted fans everywhere it plays, but when you add in the just-as-impressive talents of Galactic, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and New Breed Brass Band, plus guests Walter Wolman Washington, Cyrill Neville and Kermit Ruffins, well, you’ve got a real N’awlins party.

We’ve reached the final Wednesday night of the 2018 WLAV Summertime Blues concert series, and this one stars a guitarist and singer who’s very familiar to this stage (and the old Blues on the Mall series). Chicago’s Nick Moss is an award-winning blues-guitar marvel who’s a Midwest favorite, making this a terrific way to close out a summer of blues outside the DeltaPlex.

WE BANJO 3
When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake
Touted as the originators of “Celtgrass” music, Galway, Ireland’s We Banjo 3 combines the best of traditional Irish music, bluegrass and old-timey tunes – and has earned accolades and raves ever since bursting onto the scene about seven years ago. The award-winning, chart-topping sets of brothers – Enda and Fergal Scahill and Martin and David Howley – are touring behind their latest album, “Haven,” and have earned the nickname, “The Irish Punch Brothers” (referring to the virtuosic American band).
That the intimate Seven Steps Up has landed this stellar bunch for a stop on its U.S. tour is a real feather in the cap for the Spring Lake listening room.
LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
THE INSANE THEATRE (THE DOORS TRIBUTE)
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
Tribute Month for Local Spins Wednesdays at SpeakEZ Lounge continues with a tribute to The Doors. The Insane Theatre, a tribute to The Doors, originally was formed in Tucson, Ariz., in 2001. Now based in West Michigan, this band delivers not only The Doors’ popular tunes, but deep cuts not often played on the radio. Lead singer Chris Kemler channels the spirit of Jim Morrison in his voice and stage presence. Jim Prange, keyboard player, does double-duty in playing organ/keys and bass (+ backing vocals) just like Ray Manzarek. Guitarist Brian Haik plays finger-style and blues/melodic slide similar to Robbie Krieger, and JD Jones on drums is heavily influenced by jazz, with a style reminiscent of John Densmore.
Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the Sixth Street Park lot off Monroe Avenue a block to the north. Tribute Month closes out Aug. 31 with Chris Andrus & Steve Talaga paying homage to Elton John.
