A Michigan country singer who superstar Brantley Gilbert once hailed as a “badass,” proved her mettle on NBC’s “The Voice” Tuesday, advancing to the next round during the show’s blind auditions.
Sadie Bass overcame her self-described stage fright to deliver a powerful rendition of Keith Urban’s “Stupid Boy,” inducing show judges Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani to turn their chairs and implore the singer to choose them as their coach for future rounds.
A native of Bath, Mich., north of Lansing, who recently relocated to Nashville, Bass gushed that she “literally passed out” upon realizing she’d passed the audition to advance to the next round.
With her nervous parents cheering her on off-stage, Bass eventually chose Stefani as her coach, citing mention of her Michigan roots as a reason for picking “The Voice” judge and co-founder of the band No Doubt.
Bass also revealed her long struggles with stage fright.
“I’m a songwriter at heart. I’ve had stage fright my whole life, 25 years, and today, I just overcame that with you guys,” she told judges.
Shelton congratulated Bass for conquering her fears and “thrusting yourself into this most awkward, terrifying performance.”
Bass will now appear in future episodes of the show after the season’s blind auditions are completed.
After Tuesday’s show, Bass thanked her fans on Facebook. “I seriously couldn’t have done any of this without you,” she wrote. “Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.”
Proof of that fan support? The brief video of her performance on “The Voice” had racked up more than 88,000 views on YouTube by 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The emerging country singer has long been a Michigan favorite, opening for numerous Nashville stars. She also won an online contest in 2019 to perform with her band on a Miami-to-Cozumel cruise with high-profile artists such as Chase Rice, Lanco and Gilbert, who invited her to join him on stage during his set. He called her “a badass” singer.
