It’s sort of a “blue-collar, motor-oil” attitude.
“The way the buildings look is the way people feel: ‘Yup, I’m broken and this is what you get,’ ” suggested guitarist Alex Rahill, who performs in the alternative indie-rock band which also features singer-keyboardist Marrissa Parham and her husband, bassist Sam Parham, guitarist Andrew Grzyb and drummer Eric Grzyb.
“A lot of the music in the scene we run in really emulates that. I think it’s hard to play in Detroit and not emulate that in some way because it doesn’t feel true to the geography of where you are.”
Together for a little more than three years, The Timbre of Cedar made its Grand Rapids debut on Friday (May 24) playing at Long Road Distillers, with Grand Rapids bands Miss Atomic and The Autumnatic.

The band stopped by the studios of WYCE-FM (88.1) for Local Spins on WYCE earlier in the day to perform a pair of songs, “The Night” and “True North,” in acoustic fashion. “We wrote all these songs that we play electrically acoustically,” Rahill said. “So you’re going to hear them the way we heard them when we were writing them.”
