MONDAY
DIRTY MIKE AND THE BOYS
When: 9 p.m. Monday
Admission: Free
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
So this is the latest band to set up a Monday night residency at this beloved West Side watering hole. The promotional billing for Dirty Mike and the Boys goes like this: “East Lansing’s premiere glam jam band is a ragtag outfit of degenerates who don’t take requests and will rock your fresh socks off until the cops come or the fire alarm goes off.” (If you happen to confuse members of this band with members of Desmond Jones, who once played a year-long residency at Tip Top, then so be it.)
Get more info online on the Tip Top Facebook events page, where you can also get details about Gina Sicilia and Mystic Dub on Wednesday, Hip Hop at Tip Top on Friday, and Sunday’s Cold Hard Cash Show with Rusty Horse.
TUESDAY
LETTUCE
When: 9 p.m. Tuesday
Tickets: $29 advance, $31 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: The first person to email john@localspins.com with “LETTUCE” in the message field will win a pair of tickets to Tuesday’s show. Check The Big List every week for your chance to win concert tickets.
The Intersection gets funky on a Tuesday night with the return of Boston’s Lettuce, which ramps up its jazzy, funk-fueled strains as part of its “Wavelength” tour. The band has released a half-dozen albums since 2002, including 2017’s “Witches Stew.” In November, Lettuce plays a concert in Denver with the Colorado Symphony, which certainly should make for an interesting evening.
Also on the bill for this Grand Rapids tour stop: Daily Bread. Doors open at 8 p.m. for this 17-and-older show. Details online at sectionlive.com.
WEDNESDAY
LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
THE GORGEOUS ORANGES
R.J. NORDLUND
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
The Local Spins Wednesdays series follows up a sensational night featuring Joshua Powell and Brother Elsey with another pair of artists making their SpeakEZ Lounge debut. The Gorgeous Oranges are a psychedelic rock band based in Grand Rapids. Originally dubbed Wala Gum, the band was started as a recording project by Sean Stynes and elevated by founding members Curtis Kuipers and Dan Julian. The band’s latest album, “Not Today Satan,” continues the band’s experimental approach to home recording and production with a new batch of eclectic sounds and songs. The Gorgeous Oranges combine hard-hitting psychedelic moments with melodic songwriting that weaves in and out of pop sensibilities.
Singer-songwriter R.J. Nordlund, who recently moved back to West Michigan, will open the show. Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the Sixth Street Park lot off Monroe Avenue a block to the north.
THURSDAY
FIELD REPORT (CHRIS PORTERFIELD)DAN KELCHAK
When: 7 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $20
Where: House Concert on Grand Rapids’ Northeast Side
(Address provided when ticket is purchased)
Back in 2012, Field Report — led by Milwaukee singer-songwriter Chris Porterfield — opened for Emmylou Harris at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, this after playing with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) in the band DeYarmond Edison. Along the way, through three albums, the band has earned high praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, NPR and Pitchfork and shared stages with artists such as Wilco and John Prine. Grand Rapids musician Jason Hammond has been impressed, too, which is why he’s hosting “a rare taste of Chris performing in an intimate house concert experience.” Field Report recently released its third album, “Summertime Songs.”
As Hammond puts it, “Pull back the curtain and join us along with a very special guest, Dan Kelchak,” who is based in Traverse City. “Dan has a way of pulling on the deepest parts of your being without even trying. I am certain he would deny any of this, but when he lays into a finger-picked demonstration of his handiwork it becomes a canvas of steel-stringed beauty.”
Get tickets and details about this intimate concert online here.
POKEY LAFARGE
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $30-$35
Where: St. Cecilia Music Center, Grand Rapids

St. Louis’ ever-entertaining and charismatic Pokey LaFarge returns to St. Cecilia to kick off the 2018-2019 edition of the Acoustic Café Folk Series, bringing his blend of ragtime, early jazz, folk, country blues, Western swing and more. As Pokey puts it: “My music is always changing and it gets redefined.” That’s something that’s certainly evident on his latest release, “Manic Revelations,” with some tracks that boast an early, vintage soul/rock vibe.
Get details and tickets online at scmc-online.org. And check out Local Spins’ 2017 interview with Pokey LaFarge.
THE MOTET, MUNGION
When: 8 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $23 advance, $25 day of show
Where: Elevation inside The Intersection, Grand Rapids
LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: Congratulations to Local Spins readers Vicki Vogel and Joel Miller. They were the first to email john@localspins.com with “THE MOTET” in the message field and won tickets to Thursday’s show. Check The Big List every week for your chance to win concert tickets.
Maybe it’s funk week in Grand Rapids. The Motet follows Lettuce’s tour stop with a spectacle of funk, Afrobeat, jazz and electronic music of its own. The Denver-based band continues to tour behind its 2016 album, the “Totem,” the group’s seventh release since 1999. The band’s current tour crisscrosses the country through the end of the year. Also on the bill: the amazing instrumental wizardry of Mungion, with a special guest: Grand Rapids singer Hannah Rose Graves.
Doors open at 8 p.m. for this 17-and-older show; get details online at sectionlive.com, where you can also get info on two other shows playing The Intersection that night: Mod Sun, Caskey, Chxpo, Jimmy Bennett, LostInVegas and ForgetBrennan in The Stache, $23 advance, $25 day of show, and Emancipator Ensemble and EROY in The Intersection’s main showroom, $20 advance, $25 day of show.
