BONZO TERKS
SECRET GEOMETRY
When: 9:30 p.m. Saturday
Admission: $5
Where: Founders Brewing Co., Grand Rapids
Jam jazz is what brings the four fellows of Bonzo Terks together. Experimental free jazz is the specialty this quartet is importing from its home base in Chicago. The latest recording, “We Bought A Boat,” was released on cassette tape last month. About half of the band’s live shows are improvised: free jazz, ambient, textural and spontaneous composition, the Amarillo Globe-News reported a few years ago. That anything-can-happen approach gives Bonzo Terks a unique vehicle for connecting with the audience on any given night, bassist Luc Parcell told the Texas newspaper. The three other members are Danny Van Duerm, organ and piano; Dan Clark, drums and cymbals; and Keenan Foley, sax and clarinet. Grand Rapids progressive outlaw band Secret Geometry rounds out the bill.
Preceding this Saturday show is a 9:30 p.m. Thursday free presentation from local rockers The Legal Immigrants plus Talk Radio, which features Patty Pershayla, who has been handling plenty of West Michigan stages lately. Check here for details about these post-Independence Day shows.

SUNDAY
MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD
When: 6:30 p.m. Sunday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids Township
The multi-talented musician and activist Michael Franti has always followed his own muse. The work of his early 1990s band, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, heavy with social commentary, has even been studied by scholars, In 1994, Franti, a barefoot vegan and native Californian, formed Spearhead, and his upbeat approach to music and world peace continues to draw audiences to live performances. His music has found its way onto screens, big and small. Franti and bandmates were called in to fill the open date created when the ill Huey Lewis cancelled his Meijer Gardens appearance with the News, and the rest of their 2018 tour.
Franti’s visit to Grand Rapids follows a Friday concert at Milwaukee’s Summerfest and a Saturday stop in Chicago, then he heads to the East Coast.
