St. Cecilia’s first jazz show of 2020 boasts real prestige. Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen has turned heads with his prodigious musicianship – something he says is “about communicating the deepest levels of humanity and individuality.” He recently released Volume 4 of the “Masters Legacy Series: Emmet Cohen Featuring George Coleman.”

The first “Concerts Under the Stars” concert of 2020 features Grand Rapids’ How to Live Together, a synth-pop duo featuring Jesse Kaczmarczyk and Steffanie Rosalez, self-professed “synth-usiasts” who create inventive electronic music with synthesizers, keyboards and drum machines.

New Jersey rock band Garcia Peoples churns out what it describes as rock ‘n’ roll, twang and psychedelia with lots of heavy jamming. The group’s latest EP, 2019’s “One Step Behind,” features a track that’s more than 30 minutes long. So there.

He’s a 10-time Grammy winner whose influence extends far behind his monster international pop hit, “Don’t Worry Be Happy.” Bobby McFerrin, 69, is a jazz vocalist extraordinaire, a guy with a dynamic range who can scat, unleash impressive vocal percussion and more. He’s been part of dozens of albums since the early 1980s, from his own work to collaborations with other stars.

This concert is part of the Michigan Music Conference taking place at DeVos Place this week, with hundreds of music educators in town. They got first crack at tickets; remaining tickets are available online here.

Chicago bluegrass favorites Henhouse Prowlers bring their fetching, energetic approach to Founders Brewing, part of a winter tour that’s taking them to venues across the Midwest. The “bluegrass ambassadors” will also host a free workshop at Founders at 8 p.m. Thursday; folks must register for this pre-show, workshop event online here.

Kalamazoo’s The Founding began as a Celtic music act, but strives “to constantly push the boundaries of the Irish and Scottish music traditions.” Opening for the progressive folk band that’s earned widespread acclaim will be Acoustic Vagabondi, led by founding member Alena Leshna Collaer.

Up-and-coming Grand Rapids super-group Stone Soup & The Broken Teeth celebrates release of its debut album, “Simmering,” in this Friday night bash at the Tip Top. Ryan and Angelica Hay’s 2019 recordings, “Meditations,” and “It Doesn’t Matter – Yr Time is Ending,” are both nominated for best electronic albums of the year at the upcoming Jammie Awards hosted by WYCE-FM. The band also is featured in the 2020 Local Spins Calendar.

It’s not billed as a local showcase, but Saturday night’s lineup at The Pyramid Scheme certainly makes it a showcase of several talented Michigan rock artists. Leading the way is Grand Rapids indie-alt-rock band Leland Blue, featuring Ben Robertson, Connor Robertson, Satchel Robertson and Bradley Sinclair.

The 5 Browns playing Calvin University’s Covenant Fine Arts Center, 12:30 p.m. Thursday, free – As part of Calvin’s January Series, classical piano group The 5 Browns from Utah will take the stage – with five pianos. Get more information here.

SALES playing Dimnent Chapel at 277 College Ave. in Holland, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, $15 – The Hope College Concert Series presents Florida indie-pop duo SALES, aka Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih.
