The fuse has been lit on the final salvo of summer festivals, including this weekend’s beloved Wheatland Music Festival in Remus, and the Eastown Streetfair and Grand Rapids African-American Art & Music Festival in Grand Rapids. (Scroll down for music schedules for both events below.)
Late summer is also the perfect time to round up new music from a wide-ranging cast of Michigan artists.
This week’s Local Spins Michigan Music Showcase radio show podcast boasts the debut of fresh tracks by a dozen Great Lakes State artists, as well as a poignant 25th anniversary remembrance of the 9/11 attacks. Check out the lineup:
Kylee Phillips – The Ypsilanti indie-pop singer-songwriter releases her full-length debut album in October with full-band shows at The Acorn in Three Oaks on Oct. 9, The Stray in Grand Rapids on Oct. 23 and The Ark in Ann Arbor on Oct. 29. She’s also one of more than 50 bands and solo artists performing at the week-long Sounds of the Zoo festival taking place at multiple venues in Kalamazoo Sept. 21st through the 27th. She’ll play Bell’s Brewery’s Back Room on Sept. 22. We highlight her latest single.

Basic Comfort – Soulful, chillwave Kalamazoo band Basic Comfort just released “Too Bad,” which follows release of another 2026 track, “Something Real.”

King Ink – “Gone in a Flash” appears on Grand Rapids’ pop-hued rock band King Ink’s latest album, “For My Friends,” released last week. The album was recorded and produced by Joel Ferguson at Planet Sunday Studios in Rockford.

Theo Katzman – The podcast includes the latest solo single from Theo Katzman, a member of the Ann Arbor band Vulfpeck, and a musician who’s worked with a lot of Michigan artists over the years. That track was recorded by Katzman on a winter’s night in Detroit on a Tascam Portastudio 4-track cassette recorder. He plays Detroit’s El Club on Sept. 26.

SHELTEE – After spending 15 yeaers writing and recording songs that he never released, this Kalamazoo singer and songwriter just released the soulful pop single, “Break Even.”

Steve Scarborough – The show features “Rust Away” which leads off Grand Rapids singer-songwriter Steve Scarborough’s new studio album, “Far From the Crowd.”

Sammie Hershock – Marshall singer-songwriter and keyboardist Sammie Hershock’s new single “Dragon Song” also features Spencer Lajoye. That track will appear on her new album “Wings” that was produced by Chris DuPont and features contributions from the likes of Dominic Davis, The Accidentals, Mike Shimmin, Jeff Moehle, Mike Lynch, Kyle Joe and Monte Pride. She hosts an album-release show on Sept. 19 at The Stray in Grand Rapids with the band Rivereye.

Kitty Donohoe – Emmy Award-winning Michigan singer-songwriter Kitty Donohoe was one of many artists who reflected on the tragedy of 9/11 in words and music. Her song, “There are No Words” originally was released in October of 2001 and later re-recorded and released on the 2008 album, “Northern Border.”

Riiiver Jordan – Detroit’s Riiiver Jordan just released the pop- and R&B-driven track “Body Tea,” described as a club-ready record.

Brett Kiewiet – Grand Rapids-based indie artist Brett Kiewiet has a brand new studio album, “God Above Looking Down,” which was released earlier this month. We feature the track, “Thread a Needle.”

Chirp – Popular Southeast Michigan jam band Chirp just released its third studio album titled, “Torque.” The track “Another Way” from that recording was produced by Joe Hettinga and guitarist Sam Naples.
