There never seems to be a shortage of emerging Michigan artists to keep an eye on — and bend an ear to.
Take, for example, this week’s Thanksgiving edition of the Local Spins Michigan Music Showcase — which airs at 11 a.m. Fridays and 5 p.m. Sundays on WYCE (88.1 FM) and online at wyce.org, and on Interlochen Public Radio at 7 p.m. Saturdays.
There’s one-time “American Idol” contestant, Waverly High School grad and now-Nashville-based folk-pop singer Rachel Curtis, whose latest single, “Coming Home,” is a nostalgic treatise on the powerful memories of childhood and returning to your hometown.
Then there’s indie-pop’s Mystique, another Michigander now attending Nashville’s Belmont University, who just released a self-titled EP.
How about Grand Rapids-area Americana outfit Cold Leather Seats, which makes its Local Spins Wednesdays debut at SpeakEZ Lounge in Grand Rapids next week?
Or even Traverse City’s soulful roots rock outfit 1000 Watt Prophets, whose members are seasoned Michigan musicians, but who have just released their first two singles as a band with plans for further releases and expanding their reach across the state.
And while on the subject of veteran songwriters and performers, the Michigan Music Showcase boasts plenty of those, too: Jack White (who played the Detroit Lions’ halftime show on Thanksgiving), Organissimo (celebrating its 25th anniversary as a band this weekend), Billy King (who just released another studio album), James Filkins (a guitarist whose latest instrumental also features The Accidentals’ Sav Madigan and Katie Larson), Michigander (who just dropped a new holiday tune as he prepares for two Grand Rapids homecoming shows), The Lower Leisure Class (Kalamazoo rockers with a new four-song EP), Eric Engblade (a songwriter and in-demand multi-instrumentalist who just released the second EP in his “Plant Our Trees” series) and Sand Lake’s Adam Kenyon (whose son is also a recording artist).
It’s a rich and fertile musical landscape to be sure. Listen to the podcast below and decide for yourself.
