When it comes to fresh music drawing attention to consequential upcoming shows and tours, Michigan artists are bursting at the seams in May:
• Michigan-bred bluegrass powerhouse Greensky Bluegrass today dropped its latest EP, “The Iceland Sessions,” featuring West Michigan native and keyboardist Holly Bowling, just a couple of days before launching an ambitious U.S. tour that stops at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture on June 9;
• Kalamazoo hip-hop cellist Jordan Hamilton officially unfurls his much-anticipated new album, “Project Freedom,” at Kalamazoo’s Clover Room on May 31;
• Michigan-based singer-songwriter Jacki Daniels just released a new single, “Tonight,” with special “Singers in the Round” shows featuring Daniels and several other Michigan artists tonight at The Stray in Grand Rapids, on Saturday at The Stray in Kalamazoo, and on May 14 at Detroit’s Aretha’s Jazz Cafe;
• Young Grand Rapids indie-pop sensation Sophia McIntosh’s latest single, “Trying to Win,” comes just as she prepares to play a duo show for Local Spins Wednesdays at SpeakEZ Lounge on May 15 — opening for another teen tunesmith Izubel — a warm-up to May 18’s Local Spins Fest at Studio Park, boasting “The Future of Michigan Music”;
• Americana artist Nathan Kalish, who launched his career in the Grand Rapids area, is on the cusp of releasing his “Southern Poverty Guitar Center” studio album, with a July 19 tour stop at Founders Brewing in Grand Rapids;
• Veteran Southwest Michigan artist Greg “G.E.” Orr just released not one, but two, EPs, celebrated in early May during a star-studded show at Rugger’s Up and Under in Kalamazoo.
That just scratches the surface, with this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE also featuring the likes of Elijah Russ (playing Local Spins Fest on May 18), The Reverend Jesse Ray (who releases a new solo album on July 26 and plays Grand Haven’s Grand Armory Brewing tonight), Traverse City mandolinist Don Julin (with his new “Fractured Fiddle Tunes” album set for release later this year), Kalamazoo singer-songwriter Rob MacInnis, Grand Rapids rock band Jack Droppers & The Best Intentions, Detroit indie-rocker Danny VanZandt and Michigan jazz organ trio Organissimo (which plays SpeakEZ Lounge at 6 p.m. Sunday).
