West Michigan's music scene
With Michigan-bred artists on a roll as of late with new music releases, we figured it was a good time to roll out some of the music videos they’ve created to accompany those fresh tracks.
So, here’s a sampling of eight visually striking representations of these songs, from superstars such as Jack White to local heroes to up-and-coming artists to an upbeat Spanish-language gem.
Enjoy. (And if you’re a band or solo artist with a new music video to share, email john@localspins.com with the details and links.)
“Love is Selfish” by Jack White
This poignant acoustic ballad by Detroit native Jack White takes a 180-degree turn from the previous single that he released from his upcoming new studio album, “Entering Heaven Alive,” which officially drops on July 22. White plays Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena on April 10. The video was directed by White, with Brad Holland as director of photography.
“Tell Me” by DL Rossi
Grand Rapids singer-songwriter DL Rossi’s latest project is “an extension of the abstract painting” he’s taken up over the past year. “ He created the video for this love song himself at home.
“Studying the ideas behind the abstract expressionist movement of the ’40s and ’50s, I have been inspired to just let my brain go and not really worry about details,” he explains. “I have tried to just let my body and subconscious guide me and let my conscious-self step away.”
“Solo” by Chirp (featuring Kevin Gastonguay of Cory Wong & The Wongnotes)
This is the first single from the Ann Arbor band’s second studio album, “In Motion.” The video was shot and edited by Mark Samano of Squidlyhabu Productions.
“Midnight Headlights” by Prior Noon
The Lowell country/pop/rock band – McKenna Grody, Judah Postman, Drew Struckmeyer, Nick Struckmeyer, Jay Stadt and Joe Warren – recorded its second single at Majestic Ape Studio in Franklin, Tenn., with the track produced, mixed and mastered by Ben Reno.
“Down to the River” by Grace Theisen
Featured as an ‘Artist to Watch’ earlier this week at Local Spins, Kalamazoo singer-songwriter Grace Theisen created a striking video for a compelling song that helped earn her honors as ‘Cari Cole’s Best New Artist of 2021.’
“Grow Together” by Greensky Bluegrass
Kalamazoo’s Greensky Bluegrass releases its new studio album, “Stress Dreams,” on Friday. This is the first single, with the video shot, edited and produced by Dylan Langille, with additional camerawork by Matthew Beck. Read more about the album in this Local Spins interview with Dave Bruzza.
“Besos Marcados” by La Furia Del Ritmo
Filmed by Accesso VIP, this is the official video for the latest single from the Grand Rapids band that blends modern cumbia music with trip hop, reggae, bachata, salsa and more. The title of the track means “Marked Kisses.”
“Guard Down” by Katie Pederson
Katie Pederson premiered this video by Steve Voss in December, with a starring role for her dog, Jeffrey, adopted from the Nashville Humane Society. She released another single, “Lake Louise,” earlier this month in anticipation of a new album, “Limitless,” which will drop in the spring.
