A fresh year demands a fresh batch of chart-topping albums.
That’s how it all shook out for January’s Local Spins Hot Top 5 chart of the most played local and regional recordings on WYCE-FM (88.1).
After releases by May Erlewine, Billy Strings and Desmond Jones dominated the Top 5 the last two months of 2017, the new year’s most-played albums thus far are all making their first appearance on the chart.
So on the day that WYCE celebrates the best local and regional music of the past year at Friday night’s Jammie Awards at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, the new Hot Top 5 leads off with a band that’s certainly established itself as one of the city’s most popular acts in recent years: Hannah Rose & The GravesTones and the group’s new “Awake in a Dream” EP.
That six-track recording was released in late 2017, just in time to be nominated for best blues/soul album of the year at the Jammies. The band performs at 9:50 p.m. Friday on the Stache Stage at The Intersection as part of the Jammies celebration which boasts more than two dozen performances on two stages.
Other nominees joining Hannah Rose on the Hot Top 5 for January: Cameron Blake with “Fear Not” (nominated for best contemporary folk album and performing at 6:28 p.m. Friday on the Showroom Stage), The Founding with “Form” (nominated for the Traditions! Award and performing at 6:51 p.m. on the Showroom Stage) and JRob with “Good Ain’t Enough (nominated for best hip hop album).
Rounding outt the Hot Top 5 are new releases from Cabildo, “Sin Fronteras,” at No. 3 and EPCYA, “EPCYA EP,” tied for No. 5.
