West Michigan's music scene
Call it festival mayhem.
This weekend, six different music festivals are roaring out of the gates across Michigan, making this one of the summer’s absolute busiest times for live music in the great outdoors.
Of course, the biggest — and wildest — heats up Double JJ Resort in Rothbury where more than 50,000 revelers are cheering hundreds of performances on seven main stages at Electric Forest, along with cozier event spaces.
Check out Local Spins’ Day 1 coverage here.
Michigan is represented in modest numbers by the likes of electronic music stars GRiZ and Claude VonStroke, along with a Grand Rapids artist playing the intimate Grand Artique stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, Caitlin Cusack.
But the weekend’s other festivals are chock full of Michigan acts, several of which are featured as part of this week’s Local Spins Michigan Music Showcase (in addition to the aforementioned GRiZ, Claude VonStroke and Caitlin Cusack):
Money Soup (Smiling Acres Music Festival in Trufant), On the Lash (Holland Waterfront Celtic Festival in Holland), Eric Engblade (Dam Jam in Calumet) and 496 West (Live at Idlewild).
This week’s show also features fresh tracks from Katie Greene, The Monkbirds, Lost at Ease, Adrian Jay Mitchell and The Reverend Jesse Ray, as well as live Latin jazz from West Michigan’s Grupo Aye, recorded by Local Spins at Monday’s Jazz in the Park show hosted by the West Michigan Jazz Society at Walker’s Millennium Park Meadows.
