When Local Spins on WYCE ushered in 2020 in early January with an in-studio visit by the Tomas Esparza Blues Band, there was no inkling of how things would change in coming months — for the Grand Rapids community radio station or for musicians and music lovers everywhere.

By the end of March, sparked by the coronavirus shutdown, I was recording my guest interviews via Skype from home, starting with singer-songwriter Cole Hansen, who was releasing her Americana solo debut album amid the 2020 pandemic.
Nine months later, those interviews are still taking place remotely and it’s uncertain when in-studio guests will be able to return.
In spite of all that, Local Spins on WYCE has spotlighted interviews with more than 50 Michigan artists this year, and debuted well over 300 new tracks by local and regional acts.
So, for Christmas Day, the show premiered new original holiday music by Max Lockwood and Pete Kehoe, as well as song debuts from Geoff Stockton, Tyler Twisted and Kalysta. After that, Local Spins on WYCE revisited standout tracks by Michigan artists we showcased throughout the year: The Tomas Esparza Blues Band, Aspen Jacobsen, The Blue Pines, Political Lizard, Nicholas James Thomasma, Seth Bernard, Steve Rivers, Jay Jackson & Rick Chyme, The Legal Immigrants and Patty PerShayla & The Mayhaps.
