Hailed by Jazz Times for its punchy tunes and mix of hard-bop and contemporary Latin sounds, Grand Rapids’ Evidence Jazz is led by saxophonist Michael S. Doyle, who formed the band after moving to West Michigan from New York. The group has served as “a hard bop haven for some of the state’s best jazz players” and brings a Big Apple feel to its music. The band’s credits include performances with guitarist Mark Elf and Delmark Records’ vibraphonist Jim Cooper, as well as appearances at the annual Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Jazz Festival, the Lansing Old Town Jazz Festival and GRandJazzFest.
For this Local Spins Wednesday appearance, the band will feature Doyle on tenor and soprano saxes and flute, Brad Fritcher on trumpet and flugelhorn, Steve Talaga on piano, Tom Lockwood on bass and Fred Knapp on drums. It shapes up as a night of impeccable jazz. This is the 11th annual tribute to iconic songwriter Bob Dylan, all organized by Grand Rapids singer-guitarist Nicholas James Thomasma (who also hosts Tuesday’s open-mic nights at Founders). This year’s multi-band event celebrating Dylan’s 77th birthday is shaping up as one of the most impressive yet with performances by Mark Swanson, Hazy Past and Nicholas James & The Bandwagon, which has worked up a special Traveling Wilburys set. In addition, there will be a special Bob Dylan & The Band tribute set by Before the Flood.

Earth Radio has quickly established itself as the sort of super-group of musicians that other musicians want to see. The neo-soul and experimental rock outfit features singer-keyboardist Hannah Laine, bassist-singer Justin Avdek, drummer Mario Copeland, keyboard player Dutcher Snedeker and guitarist Travis Swanson. They’ll play this show with two other West Michigan bands that have turned heads over the past couple of years: Grand Rapids rock band The Zannies and Muskegon funk-rock band Flexadecibel.

Traverse City’s nationally acclaimed The Accidentals headline the event with their audience-engaging alt-folk, and Grand Rapids rock band Conrad Shock + The Noise opens the show about 4:45 p.m. C’mon down to cheer some of West Michigan’s musical stars, snag some freebies and toast the beginning of the summer festival and concert season. Beverages and food will be available for sale, making it the perfect Memorial Day weekend party.
Runners can sign up for the 5k Race that begins at 4 p.m. online here. Also, Access of West Michigan — which cultivates solutions to poverty in the Grand Rapids area — will be on hand to share its important mission. Vance Joy playing 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, SOLD OUT – Australian indie-pop singer-songwriter Vance Joy (“Riptide”) is touring behind his latest studio album, “Nation of Two,” which soared to No. 1 on Australia’s chart and to No. 17 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Alice Merton opens the concert.

Not only that, but masterful guitarist and singer Jim Shaneberger from Grand Rapids is an artist not to be missed.
Michigan Rattlers playing shows in Ferndale, Lansing, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids – Hailing originally from Petoskey, the L.A.-based Michigan Rattlers (Graham Young and Adam Reed) play a rousing form of Americana that’s earned them national accolades. They’re playing several Michigan shows on their current tour, starting with Thursday night’s stop at Otus Supply in Ferndale ($15-$20), Friday at Mac’s Bar in Lansing ($10), and Saturday at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Café in Kalamazoo ($10-$12). Hank Mowery & The Hawktones at Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill ($5) and Jimmie Stagger at Billy’s Lounge ($5) on Friday – Blues hounds have a tough choice Friday, or they have to be prepared to do some cross-town cruising to catch both of these legendary acts. Harmonica ace Hank Mowery and his band fire up the Tip Top starting around 9 p.m., with guitarist Jimmie Stagger and his crew taking the stage at Billy’s around 9:30 p.m. Oh, and another terrific regional blues act, James Reeser & The Backseat Drivers, revs up Billy’s on Saturday night.
