SOUL PATCH
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
Local Spins Wednesdays presents “Traverse City Night” at SpeakEZ Lounge. Soul Patch has been a popular act in northern Michigan for years, unleashing “conscious groove” music — an intoxicating blend of rock, reggae, funk, bluegrass and jam band-styled fun that’s all about spreading love, positivity and laughter from the stage. These guys — who released the full-length “Dirty Work” in 2016 — are making their first-ever appearance at SpeakEZ Lounge. Prepare to dance the night away.
This will be a special night and part of Local Spins’ mission to expose Grand Rapids audiences to compelling artists from other Michigan cities (Traverse City, Kalamazoo, Detroit, Lansing). As always, Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing (a new sponsor) and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the Monroe Avenue NW lot kitty-corner from SpeakEZ Lounge. KATY PERRY
PURITY RING
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $50.50-$130.50
Where: Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids
Rolling Stone magazine described the music on Katy Perry’s latest album as navigating “a less bombastic pop universe” with a “mish-mash of electronic-leaning pop,” while the New York Times called it “her most artistically confused,” with her recent New York show coming across as a “carnival” and an “exuberantly distracting concert” that was nonetheless over-the-top in its wild entertainment value.
Perry returns to Grand Rapids this week as part of the national tour in support of the new album, a concert described as “an imaginative trip from outer space to inner space,” full of mega-hits. Opening the show will be Canadian electronic pop duo Purity Ring, which has earned a fair amount of acclaim. Get tickets and details online at vanandelarena.com.
THE SECRET SISTERS
KEN YATES
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $25-$35
Where: Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake
Laura and Lydia Rogers are sisters reared in legendary Muscle Shoals, Ala. and they know both sides of the coin. They had a storybook discovery experience in Nashville, toured with Bob Dylan and even saw native Detroiter Jack White contribute on guitar to their Secret Sisters 2010 debut album. But that sophomore effort is always a risky step, and their second recording disappointed their label, which dropped them. They went home, went bankrupt and almost left the music business. But singer songwriter Brandi Carlile believed in The Secret Sisters, and agreed to co-produce their third effort, this one for New West Records, “You Don’t Own Me Anymore,” which was released in June. Their website calls it “a document of hardship and redemption.” Now the Rogers sisters are bringing their secrets to the Seven Steps Up stage in Spring Lake. For tickets, check here.
Opening the show is Ken Yates, a Canadian singer-songwriter who grew up in London, Ontario and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
