LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
OLIN CLARK CD-RELEASE SHOW
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids-area native Olin Clark is a supremely gifted jazz guitarist, but his music defies easy categorization — steeped in jazz but with a truly contemporary, boundary-pushing flair. Clark is a musician and composer currently residing in New York City. His diverse and unique blend of jazz, rock and folk-inspired melodies is spotlighted brilliantly on his full-length debut album, “Bright,” which will be available for sale at this Local Spins Wednesday show. Joining Olin for this evening celebrating that debut release at SpeakEZ Lounge will be saxophonist Ben Stocker (Miami, Fla.), bassist Stanley Ruvinov (Seattle, Wash.) and Ethan Bousma (Grand Rapids).
As always, Local Spins Wednesdays feature Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the Monroe Avenue NW lot kitty-corner from SpeakEZ. Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE. Come check out a rising, uber-talented star from West Michigan.
REVEREND PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND
When: 9:30 p.m. Thursday
Admission: Free
Where: Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids
This rambunctious, Indiana-bred country blues outfit uses an arsenal of musical tools to unleash its audience-pleasing assault: washboards, resonator guitars, drums, rousing vocals. On the same week that Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band was announced as the headliner for this summer’s Beaver Island Music Festival, the band rolls into Grand Rapids to fire up the stage at Founders Brewing once again. Not only that, but Wire In The Wood is also on tap for this show.
Get the lowdown at foundersbrewing.com, where you can also find details about Saturday night’s show starring ska/reggae/punk band Bumpin’ Uglies, plus The Joey Harkum Band, $5.
DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL
BEACH SLANG, KISSISSIPPI
When: 6:30 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $33.60-$63.10
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
Hard to believe, maybe, but singer Chris Carrabba and Dashboard Confessional have now been around for 18 years, churning out that emo-driven alt-rock and acoustic rock that’s attracted ultra-enthusiastic (and often screaming) fans. Carrabba and crew are touring behind their latest album, “Crooked Shadows,” which was released in February and features the single, “We Fight.” Also on the bill for this tour stop will be Beach Slang and Kississippi.

JAKE’S MUSIC FESTIVAL:
THE AUTUMNATIC, POTATOEBABIES
VALLEY GIRL, CONRAD SHOCK + THE NOISE
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $10 ($25 VIP)
Where: Elevation @ The Intersection, Grand Rapids
LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: Congratulations to Angie Chase, who was the first person to email john@localspins.com with “JAKE’S” in the message field and won a pair of tickets to Friday’s festival. Check The Big List every week for your chance to win concert tickets.
Jake’s Music Festival is stepping up to a new downtown venue for 2018: The Intersection’s much-buzzed-about Elevation, which hosted its first public concert Saturday night. The Autumnatic, Valley Girl and Conrad Shock + The Noise will play the Friday festival, which raises money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, with jocular and irreverent longtime Grand Rapids rock spectacle The PotatoeBabies also pumping up this year’s event. Jake’s Music Festival, which had been staged as a day-long event for many years at Wealthy Theatre, was held at The Orbit Room in 2017. This year’s festival is also being held for the first time on a Friday night, as opposed to Saturday.
Get more information online at jakesmusicfestival.com.
STARKBIERFEST
When: 3-9 p.m. Saturday
Admission: Free (21 and older)
Where: Cedar Springs Brewing, 95 N. Main St., Cedar Springs
It’s back for another year. Cedar Springs Brewing aims to heat up a chilly April with its annual Starkbierfest, featuring the release of four beers, a sausage party and performances in a heated tent by Dave Slavinski (3:30 p.m.), progressive bluegrass band Fauxgrass (4:30 p.m.) and rockabilly’s Delilah DeWylde (7 p.m.)
Get more information about this spring break festival online at csbrew.com.
OVER THE RHINE
When: 8:30 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $25 in advance; $30 day of show
Where: Bell’s Eccentric Cafe, Kalamazoo
Ohio’s Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, as Over The Rhine, joke about being the house band at Calvin College, but this time they’re stopping at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe’s Back Room for a seated, ages 21+ show. The couple’s indie folk vibe trends toward the dark side lyrically, while the music resonates, with multi-instrumentalists Berquist mostly on guitar and Detweiler mostly on keyboards, and both providing compelling vocals with experienced harmonies. Their Martinsville, Ohio farm will host the Nowhere Else Festival over Memorial Day Weekend, with a two-day line-up (plus a Friday VIP concert) encompassing a wide arts net including fine art and writing. Festival proceeds are being used to renovate the couple’s 140-year-old barn into an arts center.
Tickets for the Bell’s show are available online here. Also check the Bell’s website for details about the 7:30 p.m. Thursday show featuring indie-rockers Reggie and the Full Effect (keyboardist James Dewees of The Get Up Kids), with The Mushmen and Lipstick Jodi ($14 in advance, $17 day of show).
BRAD PAISLEY, DUSTIN LYNCH
CHASE BRYANT, LINDSAY ELL
When: 7 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $29-$189
Where: Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids
Multi-platinum-selling country singer Brad Paisley – winner of multiple Grammy, American Music and Academy of Country Music Awards — leads an all-star lineup as he continues his “Weekend Warrior World Tour.” Dustin Lynch, Chase Bryant and Lindsay Ell ramp up this Grand Rapids tour stop.
With more than 11 million albums sold, Paisley has a dozen studio albums under his belt … and more than 7.4 million ‘likes’ on Facebook. Get tickets and details online at vanandelarena.com.
WILD CHILD
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $15 advance, $20 day of show
Where: The Pyramid Scheme, Grand Rapids
Austin, Texas indie-pop band Wild Child is touring behind its fourth album, “Expectations,” which was released in early February. The band – Kelsey Wilson, Alexander Beggins, Sadie Wolfe, Tom Myers, Matt Bradshaw, Tyler Osmond and Cody Ackors – has earned a buzz for its music since release of its second album back in 2013, landing awards and appearances on late-night TV and high-profile music festivals.
The Wild Reeds also play this Grand Rapids show. Get tickets, info at pyramidschemebar.com.
MERCYME, TENTH AVENUE NORTH
When: 6 p.m. Sunday
Tickets: $19
Where: Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids
Christian music’s MercyMe has long been a chart-topping band – with big hits such as “I Can Only Imagine” and “Word of God Speak” — that’s touring with fellow GMA Dove Award winners Tenth Avenue North. Also on the bill: Tim Timmons. MercyMe released “I Can Only Imagine: The Very Best of MercyMe” in early March.
Some tickets were still available early this week in a few seating sections at Van Andel Arena. Get details online here.
ROBIN TROWER
When: 8 p.m.Sunday
Tickets: $49.50-$59.50
Where: Kalamazoo State Theatre, Kalamazoo
If you can remember the 1960s and 1970s, the name Robin Trower comes with some specific auditory memories. A Brit, Trower’s star began rising with Procol Harum (“A Whiter Shade of Pale,” 1967) before he cut out to establish his own bands and issue the well-known “Bridge Of Sighs” album of 1974. A 2008 double live album was recorded at Royal Oak Music Theater. But this guitar master has released 23 career recordings, and brings his Stratocaster confidently into Kalamazoo, the birthplace of Gibson Guitars. Trower, 73, appears to have recovered from the flu which forced him to leave the stage March 20 in Annapolis, Md., put him in the hospital overnight and axed two shows from his current tour.

UNDER-THE-RADAR PICKS
Red Legs, Secret Forte, Wala Gum and Talk Radio playing The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, 7 p.m. Friday, $8 advance, $10 day of show – Grand Rapids alternative pop-rock band Red Legs leads this muscular bunch of local bands (Secret Forte, Wala Gum, Talk Radio) in lighting up the Scheme.
Alex Perez, Not the Cringes, Frankie & Myrrh playing Park Theatre, 248 S. River Ave. in Holland, 8 p.m. Friday, $5 advance, $8 day of show — Alex Perez enhances his show with percussion tracks, loops, “a projector and a combination of a few instruments.” Not The Cringes is described as an indie-rock band “with an emphasis on groove and complexity.” Frankie & Myrrh boasts “thick and sensual grooves with dreamy rhythm guitars.”
Shawn Butzin, Lighting Matches and The Rupple Brothers playing Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill in Grand Rapids, 9 p.m. Friday, $5 – This could be subtitled, “Singer-Songwriter Night.” Shawn Butzin (Americana, country, folk) and Lighting Matches (folk, pop, indie-rock) create compelling songs that have captivated Michigan audiences, as have Chesaning’s Rupple Brothers and Company (folk, psychedelia). Interestingly, so does the lineup at Tip Top on Saturday night: Nordy, El Brandino, Van Tassel’s Uncanny Elixer, $5. Details about both shows here.
Nightline and The Sleep Cheaters playing Creston Brewery in Grand Rapids, 9 p.m. Friday, free – Punk night at Creston boasts performances by Nightline and Sleep Cheaters, with special guest Joe Rodriquez.
Flexadecibel playing Billy’s Lounge in Grand Rapids, 9:30 p.m. Friday, $5 – Muskegon funk-rock band Flexadecibel will get the party going at Billy’s Lounge on Friday night, with Denise Davis & The Motor City Sensations keeping it going on Saturday night. (And just down the street at Mulligan’s Pub, VOLK and Stovepipe Stover rev things up Friday, followed by The Monolithic, Ars Nova and Overdrive Orchestra on Saturday night.)
Kayzo at The Intersection ($22.50-$25), SunSquabi at Elevation @ The Intersection ($16-$18) in Grand Rapids, 8 p.m. Saturday – Consider this an upstairs-downstairs electronic music feast at The Intersection. California DJ and producer Kayzo (with 4B, Dubloadz, Gammer and JSTJR) will rev things up in the main showroom upstairs on Saturday night, with Colorado’s SunSquabi (plus ExMag and Flats Stanlie) bringing the party to Elevation downstairs. Details, tickets online at sectionlive.com, where you can also find info about more electronic fun at the ’Section this week: 12th Planet on Tuesday; Stylust and Esseks on Thursday; Dr. Fresch on Friday.
Electric Tuna playing One Trick Pony, 8 p.m. Saturday, free — ET is at home here in the cozy confines of One Trick Pony, where the four bandmates have played for years in one configuration or another. The band includes Pete Bardolph and Dave Marsh, guitars; Chris Bardolph, keyboard; Mark VanderKolk, bass; and Rick Devon, drums. Rock ‘n’ roll covers and unexpected deep tracks. Call 616-235-7669 for reservations. Thursday’s 8 p.m. free show at OTP features Olivia Mainville.
Seth Bernard & Andrew Schrock playing Salt of the Earth, 114 E. Main St. in Fennville, 6 p.m. Sunday, $15 – Starring Earthwork Music collective founder and respected singer-songwriter Seth Bernard and singer Andrew Schrock (The Mainstays, Schrock Brothers), this evening will be filled with “Songs of Peace & Love.” Call 269-561-7258 for reservations.
We Came As Romans playing Elevation @ The Intersection, 7 p.m. Sunday, $20 week of show, $22 day of show — Hang onto your eardrums for this well-known metalcore band, which has roots in the Detroit suburb of Troy, although none of the current members were part of that original high school band born in 2005. The six member-band is touring in support of its 2017 release, “Cold Like War.” Joining the line-up are The Plot In You, Oceans Ate Alaska, Currents, Tempting Fate and Muskegon-based Of All We Cherish.
