Try this for a study in contrasts:
On Thursday, hip hop’s Jeezy ignited what ended up being a sellout crowd at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, part of the tour behind his latest album, “Seen It All: The Autobiography.” The wild show included a fan “making it rain” by throwing wads of cash into the air in the middle of a song. A frenzied affair.
On Saturday, during his one-man show for a few hundred people at The Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville — part of the 9th annual fundraiser for Music to Benefit Music — country singer-songwriter and guitarist Mac McAnally had fans riveted to his homespun tunes and chuckling to the tales he told between songs, from joking about his tiny hometown in northern Mississippi with “one traffic light, one yellow page and one girl” to his experiences in Nashville: “I don’t generally write cheatin’ song because it’s a very competitive field.”
And throughout the weekend in Eastown — unfurling in tightly packed living rooms and some basements “lit with a single 60-watt bulb” — the third annual Lamp Light Music Festival entertained young audiences in the perfect definition of “intimate concerts,” with bands and artists such as The Go Rounds, Ghost Heart, Lady Ace Boogie, J Rob, Yolonda Lavender, strong>Dena Dena Dena, Alexis and Shane Tripp getting up close and personal with their fans. The tally? More than 40 bands playing six houses over three days.
But there was more:
• Frontier Ruckus and Sacred Strays officially released new albums at The Pyramid Scheme during a Thursday show that also featured Valentiger. The club followed that up on Friday with Sallie Ford, Crooked Fingers and Mat Churchill.
• Jonathan Edwards returning to Spring Lake’s Seven Steps Up listening room for the fifth time, and regaling a near-capacity crowd.
• Whitechapel getting its deathcore metal cranked up at The Intersection.
• The Campanellis, Hollywood Makeout, Trophy and Away Game playing a lively show at Founders Brewing Co.
• A rather small audience turned out for an enthusiastic Kix Brooks at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center.
• The same night, a much bigger (and younger and largely female) crowd packed Intersection for country star Granger Smith.
