Sequestered mostly at home for months due to the coronavirus pandemic, many Michiganders have found comfort in music — from familiar artists and songs to the exploration of tantalizing new releases.
That’s certainly reflected in the Local Spins Hot Top 5 Chart for May which simply reshuffles the order of chart favorites from recent months when it comes to the most-played local and regional albums at WYCE (88.1 FM).

A reshuffling of Top 5 artists in May.
Topping it all is the debut from Olivia Mainville’s Via Mardot, a self-titled album released in February that’s continued to draw favor from WYCE programmers and listeners: It’s the third straight month that the five-song EP inspired by French ye-ye pop and spaghetti Western music has landed in the Hot Top 5, but the first time it’s taken the No. 1 spot.
Mainville said she’s surprised by the reaction to her new project because she wrote the “Via Mardot” EP for herself.
“So if other people enjoy it, that’s a big plus,” she said. “Also, producer and recording engineer Adam Schreiber’s production style really helped take my sound into the direction I’ve always wanted it to go.”
Mainville has spent lots of time during the COVID-19 shutdown taking and playing song requests online — “song requests that I otherwise wouldn’t know. It definitely took a lot more time for every song than I thought it would and I’m extremely thanksful for every person who sent in requests.”
The Holland native who now makes her home in Ferndale in the Detroit area added that she’s focusing her musical efforts in 2020 on licensing her music and deciding the fate of an as-yet-unreleased new album.
The rest of the Hot Top 5 for May featured albums that all have appeared on the chart in recent months, with Molly’s “Shine” at No. 2, followed by Djangophonique’s “Jazz Du Jour,” Darcy Wilkin’s “Bristol” and Pink Sky’s “Meditations Reworked.”
