With weather that seemed more appropriate for March or April, what the second annual Perrin Brewing Ice Jam Winter Festival on Saturday lacked in snow more than made up for with a gleeful crowd of thousands and a showcase of regional music that cut across several genres – bluegrass, indie-rock, blues and ska.

Following a 5K Frostbite Race/Walk that attracted a record 600 participants, Fauxgrass started things off with an upbeat set of progressive bluegrass that just helped fire things up for the jaw-dropping musicianship of Marshall blues-rock guitarist Jake Kershaw and his band. The crowd flocked close to the stage to get an eyeful and earful of the virtuosic 17-year-old (who will also fire up the first HopCat presents Local Spins Live at River City Studios session of 2018 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, which will be streamed live on Local Spins’ Facebook page).
Even bigger throngs pressed even closer to the stage for garage/surf/indie-rock’s Hollywood Makeout and a skank-inducing, party-up set by Grand Rapids ska legend Mustard Plug, led by frontman David Kirchgessner. All in all, the jams for Ice Jam were impressive, especially when it comes to donations for Kids’ Food Basket, the beneficiary of Saturday’s event.
