The Mickeys claim they’ve been singing together since they were born.
Well, maybe crying together to start.
But since then, twins Amy and Julie Mickey have certainly honed what they call their “harmony-heavy sound,” forming the Southwest Michigan-based band in Nashville back in the 1990s and gradually expanding its sound and reach.
Now married, the 48-year-old siblings, Amy Sherman (vocals and percussion) and Julie Peebles (vocals, guitar and mandolin), describe The Mickeys as “an indie-Americana band featuring twin harmonies, powerful guitar and stylish bass.”
Guitarist and Dobro player Bascom Peebles joined the group in the early 2000’s, followed by bassist Nick Moored in 2022.
The band has released several recordings over the years, including its latest single, “Show Me How,” in early 2024.
Influenced, Peebles said, by “gospel hymns, Alison Krauss, Freddie King, Santana, The Allman Brothers” and more, the group plans to record and release more music in 2025.
Before that, however, they’ll make their Local Spins Wednesdays concert series debut at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Nov. 6) at Grand Rapids’ SpeakEZ Lounge. Get details here.
“Folks can expect a mix of originals, plus covers ranging from Tom Petty to Norah Jones, lots of harmony and switching guitars,” Sherman said.
The thrill in performing an intimate show like this, the twins said, comes from “the connection with the audience and getting lost in the music.”
The band follows up its Grand Rapids show with a Dec. 12 appearance at Liquid Note in Otsego. Admission is free at Liquid Note; get more information online at liquidnote.com/events.
