MONDAY
THE DECEMBERISTS
ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER
When: 7 p.m. Monday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids Township
Folk-rock’s The Decemberists, led by consummate songwriter Colin Meloy, returns to Meijer Gardens, this time in support of the Portland band’s latest studio album, “I’ll Be Your Girl,” featuring the single “Severed.” It’s the band’s eighth full-length album since forming back in 2000 and represents a bit of a change in terms of the group’s sonic approach with the addition of synthesizer-propelled tunes.
Singer-songwriter Eleanor Friedberger (half of the indie-rock duo The Fiery Furnaces) will open the show, with gates opening at 5:45 p.m. Also worth noting: The Decemberists had to postpone/reschedule their Saturday tour stop in Indianapolis due to Meloy’s “acute vocal strain.” Hopefully, he’ll have recovered for the Grand Rapids show and will be in good voice.
TUESDAY
THE PORTERS
When: 7 p.m. Tuesday
Admission: Free
Where: Lamar Park, Wyoming
Consider this the first volley in what’s shaping up to be an uber-busy summer of free outdoor concerts in communities across West Michigan. Wyoming’s “Concerts in the Park” kicks off with “Kids’ Night” featuring a special children-oriented performance by The Porters, who are a Grand Rapids folk/Americana super-group of sorts featuring Pete and Barb Weatherhead and Lynn and Matt Porter.
Dozens of regional artists are featured in dozens of these outdoor community concerts this summer, and you can see the full roster in Local Spins’ Free Community Concerts listing, including a few other free shows this week: The Crane Wives playing Wednesday night in Sparta, Kari Holmes playing Hudsonville on Thursday and a Friday flurry that features the Westside Soul Surfers playing Muskegon, Delilah DeWylde playing Middleville and Shelagh Brown Band playing Kalamazoo.
WEDNESDAY
JACKSON BROWNE
When: 7 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids Township
Iconic singer-songwriter Jackson Browne has become a regular at Meijer Gardens, whether performing solo with an arsenal of guitars or playing with a full band. His current Midwest tour was announced earlier this year as a full-band show, but you can expect Browne to be as engaging as ever with his audience, often taking requests based on an encyclopedic catalog of material that extends back to the late 1960s. And at 69, Browne still brings it vocally and instrumentally and, yes, politically
Gates open at 5:45 p.m.
THE RED ELVISES
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: $15
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
This is a Tip Top legend. The Red Elvises, led by the ever-engaging Igor Yuzov, swing back to Grand Rapids as part of their never-ending tour, bringing smiles, a party attitude and an eclectic musical approach that weaves surf rock, funk, soul, disco, rockabilly, and yes, Russian vibes, into its shows. Get tickets and details online here.
Tip Top follows this with two groovy benefit shows: Cabildo at 3 p.m. Saturday, raising money for West Elementary School, and Hannah Rose Graves, Channing & Quinn and more performing at a benefit for Caitlin Anne at 7 p.m. Sunday. (More about that below.)
LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
JACK DROPPERS & THE BEST INTENTIONS
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
If you haven’t yet heard this impressive West Michigan roots rock group, its high time you did. Jack Droppers & The Best Intentions is led by Droppers, a Grand Rapids native who grew up in Florida, returned to West Michigan to attend Hope College and has re-established himself in Grand Rapids with this Americana-fueled ensemble which last year released its first studio album. Droppers grew up with the music of Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen and that gives some of his songs an anthemic quality while still exuding his own style and distinctive vocals. The debut album’s title, “I Just Wanna Play Rock & Roll With My Friends,” reflects the group’s garage-rock attitude.
Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the Sixth Street Park, a block north on Monroe Avenue NW.
THURSDAY
CALLAGHAN
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $25-$35
Where: Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake
Singer-songwriter Callaghan makes her annual stop at Spring Lake’s Seven Steps Up, delivering the sort of “stunning” vocals paired with exceptional songwriting that’s earned her praise across the globe. A native of the United Kingdom who moved to the United States about eight years ago, Callaghan also has collaborated with producers Starr Parodi, Jeff Eden and Anthony Resta. She released her most recent EP, “Skin on Skin,” in March, featuring four new songs.
Get tickets for Thursday’s concert online at pindropconcerts.com.
THE RECORD COMPANY
EDWARD DAVID ANDERSON

Tickets: $20 advance, $25 day of show
Where: Elevation inside The Intersection, Grand Rapids
LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: The first two people to email john@localspins.com with “RECORD COMPANY” in the message field will win a pair of tickets to Thursday’s concert. Check The Big List every week for your chance to win concert tickets.
California rock band The Record Company brings its North American tour to Grand Rapids just as it’s about to release its sophomore album, “All of This Life” (set to drop on June 22). In the meantime, they’ve got a very ’70s-sounding new single out, “The Movie Song.” The power trio of Chris Vos, Alex Stiff and Marc Cazorla first made a splash with the catchy single, “Off the Ground,” back in 2016.
Americana’s Edward David Anderson (Backyard Tire Fire) opens the show. Details online at sectionlive.com.
THE FRONT BOTTOMS
AN HORSE
When: 8 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $25-$45
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
It’s intriguing to note how The Front Bottoms have raised their profile the past couple of years, with appearances at high-profile events such as Coachella, Austin City Limits and Shaky Knees following release of their “Back on Top” album in 2015. The New Jersey indie-rock/folk-punk band currently is touring behind a new EP, “Ann,” that features the track, “Tie Dye Dragon.”
Australian duo An Horse opens the show. Get tickets online at 20monroelive.com.

Tickets: $47-$116.71
Where: Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids
Country stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw continue their lengthy and successful “Soul2Soul World Tour,” with a stop in Grand Rapids, featuring special guest Caitlyn Smith. Rolling Stone magazine raved that the couple is “undeniably at their best” when collaborating on stage, and they’ve certainly had plenty of success as award-winning solo artists to boot.
Last November, the pair released “The Rest of Our Life,” which shot to No. 1 on the U.S. Country chart. Get tickets online here.

When: 6 p.m. Sunday
Admission: $15
Where: Salt of the Earth, 114 E. Main St., Fennville
Nathan Kalish is a road warrior and one of the most talented songwriters to ever come out of the Grand Rapids area. The Wisconsin-born, West Michigan-bred singer and guitarist has toured the country incessantly with his Americana- and country-fueled gems and his most recent album, “I Want to Believe,” caught the ear of Rolling Stone magazine, deservedly earning him accolades as one of “10 new country artists you need to know.” Officially now based in Nashville, the Sparta High School grad has crisscrossed the country as a solo artist and with his band The Lastcallers. Described these days as a country-Americana artist “with a tip of the hat” to psychedelic, folk and rock ‘n’ roll, Kalish is a superbly gifted songwriter who really embraces an authentic country vibe. His latest album was recorded at Native Sound in St. Louis with help from different musicians he’s played with on tour.
His tour swing back into West Michigan with a couple of intimate shows perfect for his music.

They bring their national tour to Grand Rapids (a day after playing the Magic Bag on the east side of the state), accompanied by Boston electro-folk duo Tall Heights.
Get more information at foundersbrewing.com, where you can also get the lowdown on Thursday’s show starring Atlanta’s retro-jazz/ragtime/blues outfit Blair Crimmins & The Hookers.
SUNDAY
IN THE BIG LIST SPOTLIGHT: SCOTT PELLEGROM’S ‘DREAM HANG’ IN GRAND HAVEN
Grand Haven drummer and instructor Scott Pellegrom has held master classes all over the world. In the United States, he notes they’re often set up with rows of chairs, clinic style, in a music retail store. Some people may have a few questions, but most everyone is reserved. In other countries, such sessions often are held in pubs or other common gathering places, with a more fun, leisurely atmosphere. So when he planned to hold his own drum workshop, he knew what he had to do to put a unique, fun spin on the event.
Pellegrom will host his “Dream Hang” event from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday (June 10) at Third Coast Recording Company in Grand Haven. This event is an open, laid-back informational evening for drummers, as well as other musicians and members of the community to meet new people, make contacts and simply have a great time enjoying music. The event will include a sampling of Dream Cymbals, with models and equipment on hand and available for purchase. But more than that, the event will offer the chance for musicians and members of the community to meet staff and other performers at Third Coast Recording Company, with beverages from local favorites Vander Mill Cider, Aldea Coffee, Grand Armory Brewing and Bodhi Tree Juice Co. Get details here.
“I combined a lot of my own favorite elements,” Pellegrom said.
“Instead of a clinic, let’s just have a relaxed, hangout atmosphere, where drummers can nerd out and jam with other performers – and other friends of theirs can still hang out, and have some fun… Why not combine all these things under one roof? All are welcome, and you can learn so much here… Everyone wins.” – Matt Marn

Indie-rock’s Colony House will get the evening started. Gates open at 5:45 p.m. Get tickets and details online at meijergardens.org.

She has done so much to help us, now we want to give back.” She’s suffering from granulomatosis with polyangiitis and also has a rare auto-immune disease. Funds raised will help cover her rent, utilities and other living expenses.
