LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
THE HACKY TURTLES
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
The Hacky Turtles create an unparalleled live environment for their distinctive music: “organic” funk-rock and folk, or a vibe that Local Spins calls “sort of like the Red Hot Chili Peppers taking a road trip to the Appalachians with John Mayer.” The Grand Rapids-based band with roots in Traverse City — Marc Kanitz, Erik Krueger, Alex Rushlow and Austin Spencer — recently released a new and very infectious single, “Grace.” Be prepared for a deliciously entertaining evening at SpeakEZ Lounge.
Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking across the street in the Monroe Avenue NW parking lot.
SIR MIX-A-LOT
When: 8:30 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: $25 advance, $30 day of show
Where: Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Café, Kalamazoo
He rapped that “Baby Got Back” and now, he’s back. Yes, Seattle hip hop icon Sir Mix-a-Lot is back out on the road. The rapper, who also hosts a radio show in Fresno, Calif., is celebrating the 25th anniversary of “Baby Got Back,” which he concedes he never expected to become a hit.
He plays his only Michigan stop on this tour at Bell’s Brewery, in between concerts in Chicago and Louisville. Get tickets and details at bellsbeer.com, where you can also find info about Thursday’s Metallica tribute, Friday’s show featuring Toad the Wet Sprocket’s Glen Phillips (with Kalamazoo’s own Brian Koenigsknecht opening) and Saturday’s concert starring Zion Lion.
WMCAT ON TOUR:
WMCAT TEEN ARTISTS
DJ TRIGGER, SWITCHPIT
ALL OF THE ABOVE HIP HOP
GIRLS ROCK GRAND RAPIDS
When: 7 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $10 advance, $12 day of show
Where: The Pyramid Scheme, Grand Rapids
If anything fits the term “emerging artist showcase,” this concert is it. The West Michigan Center for Arts + Technology hosts this special show at The Pyramid Scheme providing an opportunity “to elevate student voices in our city while supporting the WMCAT Teen Arts + Tech program.”
The all-ages event will spotlight WMCAT Teen Artists, DJ Trigger from Grand Rapids Public Schools, All of The Above Hip Hop from Ottawa Hills, the band SwitchPit from Forest Hills and East Grand Rapids High Schools, and Girls Rock Grand Rapids. The night wilil also include “special guest performances by professional musicians.” Get tickets and details online here.
JOE PUG
When: 9:30 p.m. Thursday
Admission: Free
Where: Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids
It seems like EVERYBODY has something good to say about singer-songwriter Joe Pug these days. The Maryland native gets tabbed as an Americana/folk-rock/folk artist, but he creates a distinctive style of his own, influenced by the likes of Warren Zevon, Beck, John Hiatt and others. He’s released three studio albums and two EPs since 2009, and his Grand Rapids date comes between tour stops in Wisconsin.
Get info at foundersbrewing.com, where you can also find details about Saturday’s Cosmic Knot show.
MICHIGANDER, ALL IS WELL
TIGER & FRAME
CANCELED PLANS
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $10 advance, $12 day of show
Where: The Pyramid Scheme, Grand Rapids
Midland-bred singer-songwriter Jason Singer, aka Michigander, has received deserved attention for his anthemic pop songs, earning him invites to events such as Austin’s South by Southwest and Detroit’s Mo Pop Festival. Michigander just released a new EP, “Midland,” which NPR Music’s World Café described as inspiring: “Wise beyond his years with an angelic confidence in his voice, he’s adept at crafting those musical moments that ring with high emotional impact. It’s all there in his songs; driving beats, shimmering guitars, tug-at-your-heart lyrics, and big hooks.”
You’ll get to hear all that in Grand Rapids as part of his spring tour, with All is Well, Tiger & Frame and Canceled Plans also performing sets. Get tickets online at pyramidschemebar.com.
SKITCHIN’ FEST
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Tickets: $5 each day
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
Welcome to Punk Weekend at The Tip Top. Skitchin’ Fest is back for three straight days, unleashing a torrent of terrific regional punk bands and creating an atmosphere unlike any other. Doors open at 8 p.m. Friday and at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for this second annual affair.
Friday’s lineup includes 78 Revolutions Per Minute, Grey Matter, The QUIRK and Dead Weight. On Saturday, it’s Bong Mountain, Bike Tuff, City Mouse and Shoebox GR. And finally on Sunday, it’s JOE & The Westside Orchestra, Pancho Villa’s Skull, Carmel Liburdi, El Brandino and Tonia Bug. Get tickets and all the details online here.
BIMINI BROTHERS 35th ANNIVERSARY SHOW
When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $12 advance, $15 day of show
Where: DeltaPlex Arena, Walker
What a run. Those crazy Bimini Brothers are celebrating their “last call” as part of a 35th anniversary celebration of the irreverent, funny and immensely talented band. This “farewell” show is shaping up to be a classic Bimini bash.
Not only that, but a portion of Bimini Brothers’ merchandise sales will be donated to Finish The Mission to help complete the Michigan Fallen Warrior Memorial Wall. Get details online here.
BASS COUNTRY’S CINCO DE MAYO:
LIQUID STRANGER
When: 8:30 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $25 advance, $30 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
Get ready to get rocked with a night of electronic music glory. Swedish-born “transnational dubstep” musician Liquid Stranger, aka Martin Staaf, headlines this affair – the only Michigan stop on his current North American tour. Now based in Arizona, Liquid Stranger has released a dozen recordings since 2007, including 2017’s “Weird & Wonderful EP.”
Also on the bill for this 17-and-older show: Antiserum, EH!DE, The Widdler, Run DMT, Attak b2b Trblmakr, Deadlock and Jon Parra. Doors open at 8 p.m. Details online at sectionlive.com.
THE MERSEY BEATLES
When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $27-$35 ($47 VIP)
Where: State Theatre, Kalamazoo
As they put it in their promotional materials: “When I listen to The Mersey Beatles, it’s The Beatles.” Maybe that’s because this really is the only Liverpool-born and Liverpool-bred Beatles tribute band – musicians who grew up with — and in the birthplace of — the Fab Four’s incredible music. They’ve toured internationally for many years and will pay special tribute to The Beatles’ “White Album” in their second set because this is the 50th anniversary of that record.
Read Local Spins’ revealing interview with The Mersey Beatles later this week. Get tickets and more information at kazoostate.com. VIP tickets include a before-show meet-and-greet.
LINDSAY LOU
MARK LAVENGOOD
When: 9 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $15 advance, $20 day of show
Where: The Pyramid Scheme
LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: Congratulations to Local Spins reader Isaac Powrie. He emailed john@localspins.com with “LINDSAY LOU” in the message field and won a pair of tickets to Saturday’s concert. Check The Big List every week for your chance to win concert tickets.
Talk about a special night of bluegrass-hued music. The Michigan-bred Lindsay Lou returns to Grand Rapids in support of her band’s resplendent new album, “Southland,” and, oh, by the way, guess who’s opening the show? Yup, resonator guitarist Mark Lavengood, who was a member of Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys for several years.
This promises to be a fun reunion-styled evening so get ready for some incredible vocals and superb musicianship. Tickets available online here. The Grand Rapids show follows Friday’s tour stop at Otus Supply in Ferndale.

Ruslan Sirota playing East Grand Rapids Performing Arts Center at 1122 Lake Drive SE, 7 p.m. Friday, $25 adults, $20 students – Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Ruslan Sirota will perform “jazzy covers of pop favorites” ranging from Ed Sheeran to Coldplay, as well as “smooth compositions of his own” as part of this fundraising concert for Arts for Life. Get tickets online here.
Big Fun Jam Band playing Creston Brewery in Grand Rapids, 9 p.m. Friday, free – This is the very definition of an Under-The-Radar gem. The Big Fun Jam Band is actually a super-group starring Traverse City jazz piano legend Jeff Haas, mandolin whiz Don Julin, Grand Rapids super-drummer Randy Marsh and T.C. bassist Jack Dryden. By the way, Deep Greens & Blues rolls into Creston for a show at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Lighting Matches at 6 p.m. Friday and Matt Gabriel at 6 p.m. Saturday, playing the HopCat Kalamazoo Beer Garden Summer Series in Kalamazoo – OK, now we know that good weather has finally arrived. These Grand Rapids singer-songwriters help open HopCat’s beer garden this weekend.
Michael McDermott playing Seven Steps Up in Spring Lake, 8 p.m. Saturday, $25-$35 – As Seven Steps Up puts it, “if you haven’t experienced a concert with Michael, we can promise you a concert like you have never seen before.” The singer-songwriter returns to this terrific Spring Lake listening room this weekend. Get tickets online at pindropconcerts.com.
That Beatles Thing playing One Trick Pony in Grand Rapids, 8 p.m. Saturday, free – To say That Beatles Thing has become a West Michigan sensation could be an understatement. This wonderful tribute to the Fab Four draws big crowds wherever it plays, so call 235-7669 for reservations for this show. Also, Serita’s Black Rose plays One Trick on Thursday.
Cosmic Knot and Loren Johnson playing Founders Brewing in Grand Rapids, 9:30 p.m. Saturday, $5 – Cosmic Knot sort of got its start at Founders Brewing, playing the taproom’s open-mic night. So it’s great to see this psychedelic-hued rock and jam band playing headlining slot with Grand Haven singer-songwriter Loren Johnson opening the show. Cosmic Knot will feature a special guest, too: University of Michigan professor Ramon Satyendra will sit on keyboards. If you haven’t seen this band live, don’t miss it Saturday: It will be true, immersive experience.
Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox playing 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids, 8 p.m. Sunday, $45-$76.65 — Arranger and pianist Scott Bradlee leads this New York City collective that reworks pop and rock songs into striking renditions with swing, jazz and other flavors, described as “new music, old style.” The band’s videos have become a viral sensation, with hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. The group has featured 70 different performers over the years while touring the globe. Tickets online here.
