California indie-rock band The Mountain Goats on Friday lit the fuse for an explosion of summer concerts across Michigan.
The kickoff to Memorial Day weekend and Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe’s summer beer garden concert series in Kalamazoo was a sold-out affair that had the crowd singing and dancing despite a bit of a chill in the air.
The band led by John Darnielle launched the evening with “Armies of the Lord,” the first track on the group’s latest album, followed by 2012 fan favorite, “Harlem Roulette.” What followed was a two-hour career retrospective featuring tracks from across the band’s three-decade-long career, capped by a five song encore that closed out a story-book night.

The evening included a four-song solo set from Darnielle, who also performed the night’s only cover, an apropos version of The Extra Glenns’ “Going to Michigan” (View the full set list here.)
While Bell’s summer concert docket boasts more than two dozen concerts (ranging from North Mississippi All Stars and Of Montreal to The Steel Wheels, Todd Rundgren and Old 97’s), that series just scratches the surface when it comes to concert offerings at outdoor venues across the state in 2026.
Local Spins’ “Summer Concerts @ Michigan Venues” guide now features 55 robust schedules of shows heating up the Mitten State after we added more than a dozen listings to that exclusive roster of concerts this week.
Check out some of those additions below — including the lineups for Bell’s, Red Dock, The Fox Barn, The Score, Camp Blodgett and more — and view the full guide listing hundreds of concerts here: https://localspins.com/summer-concerts-michigan-venues/
