West Michigan's music scene
Talk about rolling out a gamut of musical styles and experiences: The road to mid-October covered a lot of ground over the past week at West Michigan venues.
Classic rock’s Styx, with help from opener John Waite, got the week started on Tuesday at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center with a cavalcade of their biggest hits, starting with “The Grand Illusion” and taking fans through a career-retrospective night that included the likes of “Too Much Time on My Hands,” “Lady,” “Lorelei,” “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” and “Come Sail Away.”
They closed out the evening with the two-song volley of “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade,” leaving many fans raving about the Southwest Michigan tour stop: “Fantastic concert in Kalamazoo. They rocked the house tonight,” wrote concertgoer Rhonda Alfieri on Facebook.

The next night, regional indie-rock favorite Major Murphy unleashed their first Grand Rapids show in nearly a year at SpeakEZ Lounge, captivating an enthused crowd of fans for the Local Spins Wednesdays show by performing all of the songs from the group’s latest album, “Fallout,” with a boost from violinist Jeffrey Niemeier.
The second set not only featured Dobro whiz Mark Lavengood in unfurling older Major Murphy tracks, but the band also debuted a couple of scintillating, new Wilco-hued tunes that they’ve been recording at Lavengood’s The Bear Den in Coral, along with a stellar cover of a classic Bob Dylan tune.
On Thursday, Colorado funk/soul/jazz sextet The Motet — joined by the genre-spanning guitar phenom Keller Williams — lit up Holland’s Park Theatre.
Wisconsin’s Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, meanwhile, brought their exuberant string-band zest to Bell’s Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo on Saturday, enhancing their evening of folk and bluegrass with a boost from West Michigan’s own bluegrass heroes, the Full Cord trio.
