For February, the Local Spins Hot Top 5 Chart became a Top 10 affair.
With several ties for fourth and fifth place on the monthly chart representing the albums by Michigan artists which received the most radio airplay at Grand Rapids’ WYCE (88.1 FM), last month’s chart boasted 10 releases covering folk, rock, pop, ska, funk, country, electronic music and more — fueled, in part, by the station’s previews and attention on the February Jammie Awards show.
Leading the charge at No. 1 was an instrumental collection, “Director’s Cut: Vol 1,” by Grand Rapids producer Samil, well-known for his work with area hip-hop artists.
“That’s amazing. I’m truly blown away,” said Samil Molina, after learning that his latest release had topped all other local and regional albums on the Hot Top 5 Chart.
“I didn’t know what to expect when I released the album. I’m just really happy it’s been resonating with everyone. I’m really grateful and humbled by the support.”
Samil remains busy in 2024, working on his next studio album “with various guest features” that will be released later this year.
“I also have another instrumental album on the way this summer,” he added.
Ascending into second place on the chart is an album by a veteran Kalamazoo singer-songwriter who released her first album in eight years in December. Megan Dooley’s “Live in Kalamazoo” was recorded in front of a cozy audience at La Luna Recording and Sound in Kalamazoo back in May 2024, an effort “to put down on record exactly what I had been spending the majority of my life doing, simply and straightforwardly.”
At No. 3, it was last week’s featured artist for Local Spins on WYCE, power pop’s Pretoria, with “Where Will the Night Take Us?” followed by several ties at No. 4 (Mustard Plug, Short Panic, Loren Johnson) and No. 5 (Pablo Eskobear, The Bootstrap Boys, LVRS, Nathan Walton & the Remedy).
