It’s only apropos that acclaimed acoustic guitar rock duo Rodrigo y Gabriela would spice up its touring set list with songs featuring titles such as “The Ride of the Mind,” “Monster” and “Seeking Unreality,” consider the unreal mind trip that their virtuosic and energetic shows create.
The same might be said for the funk, jazz fusion and hip-hop prowess of Texas-based Ghost-Note which has fired up its catalog with head-bobbing, dance-inducing tracks “Spunky,” “Move With a Purpose” and “Smack ’em.”
Both bands lit up different West Michigan venues over the past week, with Rodrigo y Gabriela — guitarists Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero — playing the final show on its spring U.S. tour at Grand Rapids’ GLC Live at 20 Monroe on Saturday before heading overseas for a European jaunt in June.
Ghost-Note, meanwhile, brought the jazzy funk and more to Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe on Wednesday, with a big boost from Michigan’s own Chirp.
The band — led by Snarky Puppy percussionists Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth — made the Kalamazoo stop as part of the tour behind its latest studio album, “Mustard n’Onions.”
