Rick Chyme constantly challenges himself and those around him, whether it’s a new musical venture or some other creative endeavor.
So it’s really no surprise that the Grand Rapids hip hop artist’s bold and prolific new project with Sir Manley of Man@Work Productions would produce and release a new original song each day as part of their “Daily Pieces 365” project which is nearly halfway through its year-long run.
But this artist who never seems to stand still, who’s never satisfied with maintaining the status quo and who oozes positivity has pushed the envelope even further, encouraging everyone around him to “carve out some space to spend time doing something they enjoy or a protective factor for them” rather than putting things off.
He’s hoping his 365-day venture inspires others to block out the noise and distractions to pursue dreams and aspirations that they might have suppressed.
“We have a million reasons to not do something and to deter us … so we’re encouraging you to take some time every day with one thing because it will spill over to others,” he said, noting that he puts himself into position to “move the variables around” to provide the necessary inspiration for his daily creations. “We’re only halfway into this and I feel like I’m just getting the surface scratched.”
A ‘GIANT PUZZLE’ THAT WILL PRODUCE BEAUTY IN THE END
Chyme said some of the pieces are societal commentaries, some are stories told from a narration standpoint, some are unfinished works that are less than perfect. “These songs,” he said, “are all pieces of a giant puzzle.”
Chyme, Manley and a colorful menagerie of spectators brought part of the musical puzzle to Local Spins on WYCE, firing up a brand new track – appropriately titled “Sink” (the radio show host’s nickname) – on the air at the community radio station. (Check out the video below.)
Chyme insisted it’s important to “make that investment” with one’s time to do something that makes one happy and to develop a new skill.
“When we empower each other and ourselves, it is good for your mental health. It will release happy chemicals into your brain,” he said. “So, find that thing you are interested in even if the people around you, this noise or this distraction or someone who’s trying to get you to doubt your dream, all that stuff, you need to block it out and stay present.”
Listen to Chyme’s new track as well as a previously recorded song as part of the podcast from the most recent edition of Local Spins on WYCE, along with a video snippet from Chyme’s visit to the station below.
