When Grand Rapids power pop/indie-rock band Pretoria takes the stage tonight at The Pyramid Scheme, band members will strive for “a cathartic experience” for themselves and their fans by unfurling music with a “timeless” sheen.
They’ll also do so knowing they have the No. 1 album on the Local Spins Hot Top 5 Chart.
The group’s 2023 release, “Where Will the Night Take Us?,” jumped to the top of the chart for March, representing the release by a Michigan artist receiving the most radio airplay at WYCE (88.1 FM).
The band — guitarist Matt Burdick, Josh Bilisko and Matt Pavlock, drummer Ben DeWitt and bassist/lead singer Rob Gullett — will open tonight for fellow Grand Rapids indie-rockers Low Phase, which is celebrating release of its latest album, “Thin Mirrors,” at the Grand Rapids venue.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for the show, which will also feature sets by Headband Henny and The Cosmoknights. Tickets are $15 and available online here.
Pretoria was one of four West Michigan acts to make the Local Spins Hot Top 5 Chart for the second month in a row: Singer-songwriter Megan Dooley’s “Live in Kalamazoo” remained at No. 2, Samil came in at No. 4 with “Director’s Cut, Vol. 1” and Mustard Plug rounded out the chart at No. 5 with “Where Did All My Friends Go?”
The one new entry for March? Soulful Grand Rapids band Big Timmy & The Heavy Chevys, which entered the chart at No. 3 with their new studio album, “Feel the Weight.”
In addition to counting down tracks from the Hot Top 5 Chart, this week’s episode of Local Spins on WYCE — which spotlights music by Michigan artists at 11 a.m. Fridays and 5 p.m. Sundays on WYCE (88.1 FM) and online at wyce.org — featured new music from The Accidentals, Jordan Hamilton, The Bootstrap Boys, Pretty Sure, Outside Pocket, Birdie Country, Annie Bacon, DuPont Phillips and Matisse.
