West Michigan's music scene
Love it or hate it, Christmas music has flourished for generations, with composers, singers and musicians hailing the Yuletide season in various forms, genres and messaging.
Indeed, the rock ‘n’ roll era has produced a blizzard of seasonal music that’s often topped Billboard charts, dominated shopping mall soundtracks, radio programming and Spotify playlists, and left folks humming and singing along as they wrapped their holiday gifts.
And influential Michigan stars have contributed their share of traditional, non-traditional and highly original tracks to celebrate the season.
So, this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE flaunts a wide range of the above, including songs by Motown heroes (and Detroit natives) The Supremes and Smokey Robinson, rockers Alice Cooper, Bob Seger and The White Stripes, Grand Rapids-bred soul singers Al Green and El DeBarge, and innovative multi-instrumentalists Sufjan Stevens and The Accidentals, both of whom sowed their musical seeds in northern Michigan.
The Dec. 5 episode also featured a brand new seasonal track by Marquette-based musician Jakey Thomas (who collaborated with Lee Dyer, Parker Belonio and Matt Mitchell on the song that he mixed, with mastering by Andy Fettig) as well as the debut of fresh Michigan music by Tony Halchak & Vespa, Tom Hymn, Bob’s Dock and The Schrock Bros.
