Musically, there’s a lot to be thankful for in 2024 — especially when it comes to the impact that Michigan artists have made regionally and nationally.
Thursday’s Thanksgiving lineup for much-hyped and much-watched television broadcasts alone put Michigan in the spotlight:
• Bluegrass guitar superstar and Grammy Award nominee Billy Strings and band delivered a rousing take on “Seven Weeks in County” during “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”;
• Actor, singer-songwriter, Michigan resident and Detroit Tigers/Lions fan Jeff Daniels uncorked a fun tribute to the first-place Detroit Lions before their tilt with the Chicago Bears at Ford Field;
• Soulful Americana duo The War and Treaty, who launched their career in Albion, performed a holiday classic during the nationally televised Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. (Scroll down to watch videos of all of these performances.)
But that just scratches the surface: Local Spins on WYCE, which showcases Michigan music at 11 a.m. Fridays and 5 p.m. Sundays on WYCE (88.1 FM) and online at wyce.org, has debuted more than 375 songs by Great Lakes State artists so far this year and the show continued that trend by premiering nine new tracks by local and regional artists during its special Thanksgiving weekend show:
Jesse Ray & The Carolina Catfish (“30 Hours” from the band’s new “Live at Off the Record,” released today), Empress Eyes (the new single “Sober”), Abe Savas (“Different People,” officially being released next week), Black Note Graffiti (“Place You Lie” from their new alt-metal album, “Resist the Divide”), SPUDDIES (“Ascension”), Mad Hat Mojo (“Spending All My Time With You” from their new album, “Brooklyn Daze”), Saltbreaker (“Floating Aimlessly”), Ally Evenson (“One Trick Pony” from her new release, “Blue Super Love”), Y-Not (the new single, “Carpe Diem,” released just today) and FlyLiteGemini (“As Days Go By” from their upcoming new album, “Time Is an Island”).

With the YouTube video racking up about 30,000 views in just 10 hours, Billy Strings’ performance of a song from his new album, “Highway Prayers,” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Thursday night drew raves from Fallon: “That’s how you do it right there! Billy Strings. Catch him on tour now. Well done! Oh my goodness.”

Tunesmith Jeff Daniels has paid many musical tributes to his beloved Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions over the years, but the one he unveiled at Ford Field on Thursday may have topped them all, considering it highlights the team’s recent, overwhelming success (and proclaims that the alleged jinx of former Lions quarterback Bobby Layne has been lifted).

After singing the National Anthem ahead of last year’s Thanksgiving Day game at Detroit’s Ford Field, The War and Treaty wowed fans with another national TV appearance by performing a passionate rendition of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday morning.
