What started as relentless, beating sunshine for those waiting in concert admission lines quickly turned into overcast rain worries for concertgoers Monday evening at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
But in the end, music won out – and those devoted music lovers (many clad in ponchos) willing to push through a bit of rain were in for a heartwarming, uplifting treat with headliner Andy Grammer bringing his unique songwriting style and positive message back to Grand Rapids.
The evening began with an impressive opening set by singer-songwriter and Melbourne native Ben Abraham, whose beautiful serenades on both acoustic guitar and piano paired perfectly with his songs’ messages of continuing to stay true to yourself, pressing on in the face of adversity.
As Abraham took the stage at the start of the show, the rain began to fall from the worrisome overcast sky. As people ran to find cover in ponchos and longer sleeves, he joked with the crowd.
“If it helps, my music is very good for a rainy day,” Abraham proclaimed.
When Grammer took the stage, all cares about rain were replaced by cheering and singing back his lyrics, from prior hits such as “Honey I’m Good” to tracks from his newest album, “Monster,” including the title track, “Magic,” “Blind Spots” and “Friends and Family.” That 2024 album tackles new topics for Grammer, looking deeper inward, including mental health and grappling with darker sides of emotion while working to keep going and growing.
The rain eventually waned (and gave way to a beautiful sunset), and singer kept the crowd on its feet, jumping, dancing and singing into the night.
As an expert entertainer, the California-bred Grammer stayed involved with the crowd throughout the night. From calling for participation in songs, to instigating dance battles between band members and the crowd, or even heading out into the crowd to sing a few lines with a beloved repeat fan, he gave Grand Rapids fans at Meijer Gardens another unforgettable evening filled with uplifting messages.
