February was “reentry month” at WYCE (88.1 FM).
With the community radio station commemorating on-air what usually would have been an in-person celebration of the Jammie Awards (if not for COVID), the lion’s share of albums on February’s Hot Top 5 Chart represent local and regional releases that previously had charted as much as a year ago.
Based on programmers’ airing of former award winners and likely nominees, as well as listener requests, northern Michigan singer May Erlewine & the Woody Goss Band’s soulful “Anyway” – released last August – not only reentered the Hot Top 5, but shot to No. 1 as the regional recording earning the most radio airplay last month.
Other reentries with strong showings included 2020 Jammie Award winner Jordan Hamilton with “My Thoughts Are” at No. 2, The Bootstrap Boys with “Between the Hat & The Boots” at No. 4, and Lady Ace Boogie’s “That’s All for Now,” Earth Radio’s “Reanimate,” Heavy Color’s “Invisible Hand” soundtrack and The War and Treaty’s “Healing Tide,” all tied at No. 5.
The only 2021 release making the February Hot Top 5 Chart was Grand Rapids garage rock band Hollywood Makeout’s “Skinny Dippin’ Scorpion,” which fell from No. 1 to No. 3.
“Last month, we featured ‘Jammies Week’ programming on WYCE to celebrate what would have been a tradition in February during normal times,” said Shane German, WYCE’s music director. “Many of the Top 5 are chart reentries and are reflective of that local music celebration we had on our airwaves.”
But the March chart could be much different: WYCE is adding 15 new local and regional releases to its rotation this month. Scroll down to check out the full list of new local music submissions below.
