The bluegrass guitarist and resonator guitar whiz who released a new solo album and parted amicably with Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys earlier this year – after more than six years of touring and recording with the band – will play two separate shows in the span of 18 hours at Founders Brewing Co. this weekend.
First, the Mark Lavengood Band and special guests, with Kalamazoo’s Kaitlin Rose Duo opening, will perform Saturday night (Dec. 23) at Founders Brewing, with music starting at 9:30 p.m. ($5 cover).
Then, he’ll return to Founders to host a special “Christmas Eve Pickin’ Party” at 2 p.m. Sunday, inviting other players to gather ‘round for a two-hour jam session.
“It’s just a fun time all around,” Lavengood conceded during Friday morning’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE, surrounded by his band and Kaitlin Rose in Studio X at WYCE in Grand Rapids.
This after traveling back from northern Michigan after playing a show earlier this week with Earthwork Music founder Seth Bernard, a partnership that will continue in earnest in 2018 with more performances and a recording, Lavengood said.
Lavengood and his band (this time featuring special guest mandolinist Brian Oberlin) performed two songs on the air, followed by Rose, a Kalamazoo singer-songwriter who unveiled a new song, “Bad Mother,” during the radio show. Watch the videos and listen to the full podcast below.

Lavengood also will perform with Bernard at Elderly Instruments in Lansing on Jan. 8, play a set at the 2018 Jammie Awards show at The Intersection on Feb. 9 and play Seven Steps Up in Spring Lake with Jason Hawk Harris on Feb. 23.
In addition to performing as a duo with Jim Beebe at Founders on Saturday, Rose will play at River Bend M-89 Sports Bar in Otsego on Jan. 19, at Saugatuck Brewing (duo) on Jan. 20 and at Potter’s Lounge in Kalamazoo (Kaitlin Rose & Friends) on Jan. 27. She’ll also participate in a Fleetwood Mac tribute at Old Dog Tavern on Feb. 16.
Friday’s pre-Christmas episode of Local Spins on WYCE also featured the debut of new tracks by Dayz and John Proulx, along with music from May Erlewine, Josh Rose, Potato Moon and In the Valley Below. Listen to the full podcast here.
