Mid-April’s weird weather couldn’t keep vinyl devotees from their appointed Record Store Day rounds on Saturday.
With many West Michigan shops touting special vinyl releases covering a gamut of styles — and on a day when vinyl sales at independent stores jump as much 70 percent — the celebrations ranged from some folks lining up the night before doors opened at Green Light Music and Video in Kalamazoo to the usual, rollicking and upbeat “Record Store Day Parade” led by Rev Charles Preston Smith outside Dodds Record Shop on Bridge Street NW in Grand Rapids.
Recorded music aside, live music took many forms across the region, too, starting on Wednesday in Grand Rapids with West Michigan’s Vespa with Tony Halchak & The Happenstance at SpeakEZ Lounge.
The following night, country singer Lily Rose pumped up The Intersection’s Elevation while Kalamazoo Academy of Rock returned with its young musicians to the stage at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo.
The weekend saw hip hop’s Grieves and Jammy Buffet at Bell’s, Americana’s J.H. Patton & The Good Companions making their SpeakEZ Lounge debut, Manic Focus, SunSquabi, In Color and Colby Acuff in different rooms at The Intersection, and symphonic deathcore’s Lorna Shore at GLC Live at 20 Monroe.
