Joshua Davis is nothing if not honest and earnest when it comes to his music and his approach to recording.
So teaming up with Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin to produce his latest album, which also leans heavily on his longtime musical comrades from Michigan — Dominic Davis, Michael Shimmin, Michael Lynch, Drew Howard, Joe Wilson, May Erlewine, Jen Sygit, Laura Ann Bates and Rachael Davis — to record songs he’d written over a two-year period was an exhaustive but ultimately satisfying process.
“We wanted to make a really, really excellent record,” he said during his visit this week for Local Spins on WYCE. “I’m kind of strong-headed in the studio and definitely a perfectionist and worked really hard on the record and there were a lot of incredible people involved. It’s nice to see the project finally realized.”
That was just part of Davis’ revealing interview during Friday’s show, which also featured the Traverse City singer-songwriter performing solo renditions of the songs “Just Getting By” and “Change the Game” from his new “The Way Back Home” album. (Davis and his band play The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids Saturday night.) Watch a video of his performance of “Change the Game” here, with the full podcast below.
