The alt-rock/indie-folk artist who fronts Jake Down & The Midwest Mess with a rotating cast of musicians recently released a single, “Locust,” as he prepares to hit the road on a short Midwest tour later this month.
Down chose to play an acoustic version of that introspective, insightful single — as well as the original tune, “Sand and Sieve” — during his visit this week to Local Spins on WYCE. Listen to his performance and the entire April 1 show podcast here.

Inspired by the likes of Dustin Kensrue from Thrice, Rocky Votolato, The Mountain Goats, Neutral Milk Hotel and “weird indie-acoustic-but-rock bands,” Down said the “real push” this year is to get his full-length album ready to record. (He and his band released the EP “Shipwreck” in 2013 and a follow-up EP, “Ghost-Ship,” in 2014).
