The reaction of regional artists slated to play the Local Spins Wednesdays series at Grand Rapids’ SpeakEZ Lounge says it all — even those performing there for the first time.
After releasing a new Winspear Records album, “Fallout,” earlier this summer, indie-rock’s Major Murphy applauded the opportunity to play its first show since 2023 at the venue come October, while pop-rock’s Phabies called it “something to look forward to” in December — a chance to get festive with their catchy rendition of “Pink Christmas Tree.”
And for alt-rock’s Lighting Matches, which has performed at the mid-week series previously, they’re “just happy to be part of the series again.”
A Grand Rapids tradition for nearly a decade, the series showcasing Michigan bands resumes after a summer break on Aug. 28 with “Tribute Month,” another tradition repeated twice a year at the downtown club and restaurant.
The ever-inventive Hazy Past will unleash its tribute to Pink Floyd on Aug. 28, followed by the debut of Lioness: An Amy Winehouse Experience on Sept. 11 and the return of That Beatles Thing on Sept. 25.
The twice-a-month performances will includes two bonus shows this fall — Halloween Eve on Oct. 30 and Thanksgiving Eve on Nov. 27. Speaking of Halloween, Garbage Angel returns to SpeakEZ with a creepy night of delicious tunes for a special Halloween affair on Monday, Oct. 28.
The original music portion of the series officially kicks off with the aforementioned Major Murphy on Oct. 9, featuring special guest Mark Lavengood, followed by the award-winning world music trio Whorled on Oct. 23, northern Michigan Americana-hued act Silver Creek Revival on Oct. 30, Southwest Michigan indie-folk group The Mickeys on Nov. 6, Local Spins ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’ Kanin Wren on Nov. 13, alt-country hero and now-Nashville-based Nathan Kalish on Nov 27, Phabies on Dec. 4 and Lighting Matches on Dec. 18.
SpeakEZ also has started hosting “Live Music Fridays,” with the fall edition launching on Sept. 20 with singer-songwriter Michael Robertson. Grand Haven singer-guitarist Jack Leaver follows on Oct. 4, pop pianist Porter Kenyon on Oct. 18, piano-based duo August on Nov. 1, pop’s Sophia McIntosh on Nov. 15 and finally, the Stanley & Quiggle duo on Dec. 13.
There’s no entry fee at the door, but as always, a $5 surcharge is added to patrons’ food and bar tabs at the end of the night to help pay the performers.
The Local Spins Wednesdays series is sponsored by SpeakEZ Lounge, Modelo Especial, Long Drink, Alliance Beverage and Local Spins.
