This week’s episode of the radio show boasted an in-studio visit from Nordy, plus new holiday music from Peat in the Creel and River City Narrative, and much more.
Like many aspiring West Michigan singer-songwriters, Nordy’s process of musical discovery has changed the way he’s approached his own music over the years.

Nordy, aka Matthew Noordhoff, “got into the punk scene early” thanks to a cousin in the band The Swellers.
But as time went on and he soaked in other musical genres – from blues to folk to the music of his parents (“A big moment of realization in life is when you realize your parents didn’t exclusively listen to bad music”), Noordhoff found his own style, something displayed in compelling fashion on his 2017 psych-folk album, “L’appel du Video.”
“It’s definitely mellowed with age. That fast, driving punk beat is a lot of fun but it’s fun to mix things up with all sorts of different rhythms and different instruments,” he said of the fourth EP he’s released since 2012.
“As you get older I think you kind of broaden your musical horizons. You become less of a snob basically and you take in new things that maybe you didn’t see as beautiful before.”
Noordhoff demonstrated that beauty during this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE, performing the original songs “Wind Advisory” and “Black Eagle” on the air. Watch a video here, with the full podcast below.

While he’s altered his approach, Noordhoff, who actually spent the first four years of his life in Taiwan, has maintained the same goal that he had as a teen – “the dream that we’re going to make this happen no matter what, and that’s what I’ve done since then, keeping that dream alive of playing music with your friends.”
He’ll play with a bunch of those talented friends at The Pyramid Scheme on Dec. 21, when he’ll be joined by Elstray Meltzer, Bet on Rats and Red Rio. (Noordhoff will also perform with Elstray Meltzer.) Tickets are $7 advance, $10 day of show; get info and tickets online at pyramidschemebar.com.
The Dec. 15 episode of Local Spins on WYCE also featured the debut of tracks by Peat in the Creel, Hannah Rose & The GravesTones, River City Narrative, The Howlers, Michigander and Honest John’s Used Cars, as well as tracks from Breathe Owl Breathe, Desmond Jones and Elroy Meltzer (this week’s musician’s pick), Listen to the full podcast here.
