West Michigan's music scene
Michigan’s landscape is joyfully littered with musical diversity — from up-and-coming young singers and musicians to veterans of rock, jazz, folk, soul and blues to bands that have made their reputation as dance-igniting favorites of the concert and festival scene.
Artists representing all of those categories — and representing nearly every corner of the state — are featured in this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE (which spotlights Michigan artists on the radio dial at 88.1 FM and streaming online at wyce.org at 11 a.m. Fridays and 5 p.m. Sundays).
Speaking of young stars, there’s mid-Michigan indie-pop singer-songwriter Kanin Wren (with a new single, “Cry Baby”), Comstock Park-bred jazz guitarist Olin Clark (who plays GR Noir in Grand Rapids with his trio tonight after releasing the single, “Veronica”) and Allegan County’s Lucy Lowis (with a new minimalist studio album, “Blue Moon”).
Fresh Michigan bands from different parts of the musical spectrum such as Misplaced Memories (Grand Rapids), Cold Leather Seats (Grand Haven), The Kings of Strings (Detroit), The Fat Animals (Battle Creek), Tiny Car Army (Grand Rapids) and Levitator (Petoskey) have found traction with their music, with several of them also impressing live audiences, too.
Then there are tried-and-true local favorites, such as folk/alt-rock’s The Crane Wives, singer-guitarist Seth Bernard, jazz pianist Lisa Sung and rock’s The Legal Immigrants who consistently regale fans with songs performed on stage and in the studio.
Listen to music from all of them in this week’s episode of Local Spins on WYCE and find out where they’re performing over the next few days and weeks — including festivals such as Blissfest and free community concerts in Hastings, Grand Haven, Allegan and Walker, where the Lisa Sung Group will play the West Michigan Jazz Society’s summer series at Millennium Park on Monday night.
