West Michigan's music scene
The region’s musical talent pool continues to grow.
There’s 23-year-old R&B artist Anaia Lachelle from Kalamazoo, a Saginaw native and Western Michigan University graduate who’s also a singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and fourth-grade teacher. After singing hooks for Midwest rappers, she plans to release her sophomore album, “Lay It Out,” later this year after dropping her debut collection in 2022.
Then there’s Metzfire, a new alt-metal Grand Rapids band that just released its debut album, “Coordinate Oblivion,” which “aims to be a mechanism to channel anxiety, depression, hurt and anguish into a beam of sonic energy that can ultimately heal in its collective commiseration.”

Led by guitarists Josh Barnaby and Mike Hafer, the group also features drummer David Koetje, bassist Mike McNally, singer Johnny Whitney, guitarist Jonas Beel and keyboardist Mike Nolen, with its next show on May 31 at Mulligan’s Pub in Grand Rapids.
On yet a different musical plane and farther north, young Petoskey-based indie-rock singer-songwriter Ryan Cassidy just released his new studio album, “The Road to Maybe,” a rich and robust collection of songs which features a guest appearance by Cherie Currie of the legendary band The Runaways.
Speaking of Michigan’s musical future, there’s the West Michigan rock band Future Things, which last week released its studio album, “Watch the Sky,” after competing in the finals of the Rock 101.7/Rebel Road Battle of the Bands at The Intersection in Grand Rapids.
There’s also a new Grand Rapids band comprised of veteran artists, namely 56 Tornadoes led by Michael Miller, who’s best known from his work with TruckStop Cobras, which for years pumped up fans with their mix of rockabilly, roots rock and honky-tonk gems.
All of them are featured in this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE — an hourly showcase of Michigan music airing at 11 a.m. Fridays and 5 p.m. Sundays on WYCE 88.1 FM and online at wyce.org.
This week’s show also spotlighted new tracks from The Accidentals, Don Julin, Lipstick Jodi, Earth Radio, Gunnar & The Grizzly Boys, Saltbreaker, Annagail, FINKEL and Pink Sky. Listen to the radio show here.
