As Chicago Beef Joint owner Peter Krupp puts it, “There’s good stuff there.”
Indeed, the Grand Rapids restaurant and venue on Ottawa Avenue NW is heating up the summer with a hectic schedule of blues and bluegrass concerts and jam sessions, as well as appearances by West Michigan favorites such as Troll for Trout, Space Bar and the Barenaked 90’s.
After hosting blues shows for the past year or so, Chicago Beef Joint recently started regular bluegrass jams hosted by mandolinist Brian Oberlin of the award-winning Full Cord.

“It was fun the first time,” Krupp said of the inaugural jam. “It was like a big picking session.”
Indeed, those sessions will run nearly weekly through the end of September, with plenty of blues and rock shows in between.
Meanwhile, about half-hour to the northeast, Greeville’s Frugthaven Farm returns with its own spin on a summer concert series, starting with Jedi Mind Trip on June 27 and continuing through the summer with tributes to Jimmy Buffett, Tom Petty and Taylor Swift, as well as performances by Lighting Matches and Brena.
These are just the latest editions to a robust roster of summer concerts taking place on stages across the state this summer — more than 60 series in all.
