JONI MITCHELL BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE SHOW
When: 7 p.m. Tuesday
Admission: Free
Where: One Trick Pony, 136 E. Fulton St., Grand Rapids
Folk singer Joni Mitchell turns 74 years old on Tuesday, and a herd of West Michigan musicians will be celebrating at an unusual Tuesday show at One Trick Pony. Mitchell’s 1971 album “Blue” has been heralded as one of the best of the second half of the 20th century, and NPR decided this year that it’s No. 1 in the list of “Greatest Albums Made By Women.” Canadian by birth and Californian by choice, Mitchell gained her last name from a brief marriage in the 1960s to Michigan singer-songwriter Chuck Mitchell. They lived in Detroit and played gigs in Southeast Michigan. After a brain aneurysm in 2015, Mitchell’s public appearances have been limited.
At Tuesday’s One Trick Tribute, expect to see Ali DeCenzo, Ronni Woods, Mark Lewis, Snooze Cycle, Patti PerShayla, Lighting Matches, Ida’s Rope, Judy Berg, Brittany Lee Moffitt, Stephanie Terpening, Jessica In The Rainbow, (event organizer) Lisa Oldham, Matt Plessner, Sarah Nokomis and Nico Diego Simon. After One Trick’s doors close around 10 p.m., the birthday party is planning to move to Founders Brewing Co.
LOUDER THAN WORDS: ROCK, POWER, POLITICS
ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME EXHIBIT
When: 6 p.m. Tuesday
Admission: Free; RSVP at 616-254-0384
Where: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, 303 Pearl St. NW, Grand Rapids
“Louder Than Words: Rock, Power, Politics” looks at the impact that popular music and lyrics have had on politics and social commentary. The traveling exhibit is a project of Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Newseum in Washington DC, and was on display in those locations earlier this year. “‘Louder Than Words’ highlights how artists have used their craft as a platform to express their views and shape public opinion,” Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, opined in a written statement. The multimedia exhibit includes video, photographs, periodicals and artifacts such as the jacket Bono wore during U2’s post-911 Super Bowl performance.
Tuesday’s opening event is free and includes music, refreshments and speakers; RSVP at 616-254-0384. Running through Feb. 11, the exhibit is included as part of the museum’s admission fee: $8 adults, $7 seniors/military, $6 with college student ID, $4 ages 6-18, free for ages 5 & under. Or become a “Friends Of Ford” museum member (starting at $35 for an individual, $50 for a family) and get in free.
Interested in more about politics and music? Listen to this Local Spins’ RSVP podcast from September, featuring Grand Rapids troubadour Ralston Bowles and Local Spins editor and publisher John Sinkevics.
LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
LAPDOGS, GREAT BLACK NIGHT
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
Lapdogs have cultivated a growing audience for their indie-rock and folk-hued offerings, with the West Michigan band’s most recent album, “You Live There,” hailed by Local Spins reviewer Ricky Olmos for its “unique, high-energy foray into indie-rock and alt-country.”
Grand Rapids’ Great Black Night delivers its own take on the shoegaze genre with reverb-drenched music that’s been influenced by the likes of Catherine Wheel, Slowdive, Whimsical and more.
Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the lot on Monroe Avenue NW, kitty-corner from SpeakEZ.
AARON LEWIS
BLACKBERRY SMOKE
ALEX WILLIAMS
When: 7 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $36.50
Where: 20 Monroe Live, 11 Ottawa Ave. NW
Well, if “That Ain’t Country,” we don’t know what is. Lead singer for heavy metal band Staind, Aaron Lewis continues his journey into country corners with this tour to support last year’s recording, “Sinner,” in a B-93 Radio-affiliated show at 20 Monroe Live. Lewis, 45, knows he’s bucking the establishment by setting aside metal for Nashville. “The establishment still has a problem with me,” Lewis told Michigan music journalist Gary Graff in Billboard magazine in 2016. “They’re just waiting to say, ‘See, I told you he wasn’t committed to the genre.’ But I am.”
Five-piece Blackberry Smoke is well-regarded in its own right and has toured with the likes of Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, ZZ Top and Gov’t Mule. And over the summer, Rolling Stone magazine named show opener and Indiana native Alex Williams one of “10 New Country Artists You Need To Know.” This is a general admission floor show. Tickets are available online here.
NEW FOUND GLORY
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $24 advance, $29 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
Pop-punk and melodic hardcore band New Found Glory first burst onto the scene back in the late 1990s, releasing its debut album, “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” in 1999 and developing a cult following in the process. Since then, the Florida band has released eight albums, including its latest offering, “Makes Me Sick.”
Also appearing on the Grand Rapids bill will be ROAM. Doors for this all-ages show open at 7 p.m. Details online at sectionlive.com.
LIZ VICE
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $5 students; $8 faculty & staff; $10 general public
Where: Hope College Dimnent Memorial Chapel, 277 College Ave., Holland
Gospel, soul and R&B have a convergence and that is where Liz Vice lives. Her 2015 CD is called “There’s A Light” and it created a stir. Sonically Awkward, a music website in Vice’s hometown of Portland, Ore., said of her May show there: “It’s easy to say that taking in one of her shows would be a spiritual experience…I believe that her positive, embracing, barrier-smashing commentary between songs really struck a chord,” just the kind of touch needed in Dimnent Chapel. Now a church music director in Brooklyn, N.Y., Vice’s unique voice makes a remarkable contribution to the Hope College Concert Series. Buy tickets online here.
MISTER HEAVENLY
When: 9 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $13 advance, $15 day of show
Where: The Pyramid Scheme, Grand Rapids
As an indie-rock super-group, Mister Heavenly has earned a solid following for its music. The band features Honus Honus of Man Man, Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and The Shins and Nicholas Thorburn of Islands and The Unicorns. With its latest album, “Boxing the Moonlight,” the band has regrouped with a “muscular sophomore effort,” says AllMusic.com. This is the group’s only Michigan stop on this leg of its North American tour, and Anna Burch will open the show.
Get the lowdown at pyramidschemebar.com, where you can also find info about Saturday’s show starring The Black Heart Procession and Sam Coomes, $13 advance, $15 day of show.
JOSHUA DAVIS
THUNDERBOLT & LIGHTFOOT
When: 9 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $15 advance, $17 day of show
Where: Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe, Kalamazoo
Two years after his much-buzzed-about run on NBC’s “The Voice, northern Michigan’s Joshua Davis has finally released a full-length album – his first since 2013’s acclaimed “A Miracle of Birds” and his fourth solo album overall. For this project, released on the Earthwork Music label, he called on producer Steve Berlin of the band Los Lobos to create what’s been described as a “more intentional, polished” album than what Davis has released in the past. And he readily admits that his experience on The Voice forced him to re-examine and hone his singing skills and to consider his voice as another instrument, and that certainly shows up in these tender and fetching tracks.
Now based in Traverse City, the veteran singer and writer has been a beloved mainstay in Michigan’s music scene, first making a splash with the popular group Steppin’ In It in the early 2000s and now calling on an established crew of well-known talented musicians to help in the studio on this solo effort. Kalamazoo’s Thunderbolt & Lightfoot opens this show, and after that, Davis will also play Saturday at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Nov. 16 at the City Opera House in Traverse City and Nov. 18 at The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids. (Bell’s follows this with reggae’s Zion Lion on Saturday and The Infamous Stringdusters on Sunday. Details online at bellsbeer.com.)
THE YAWPERS
RED RIO, TALK RADIO
When: 9 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $10
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
Colorado’s The Yawpers’ third album, “Boy in a Well,” is “a sensational tragedy set in WWI France,” recorded in Chicago by Alex Hall with production assistance by Tommy Stinson of The Replacements. The rock ‘n’ roll band’s latest project attracted attention from Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound and more, and Bloodshot Records promises that “they are awesome live and folks will be talking about the show afterwards.”
It’s also pretty groovy that Grand Rapids’ Red Rio and Talk Radio will be opening the show. Get tickets and details online here.
TAKE HOLD FEST
When: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Admission: Free
Where: The Upper Room, 1975 Jefferson Ave. SE, Grand Rapids
Many of the local, regional and national bands appearing during this year’s Take Hold Fest in Grand Rapids represent the hardcore or post-hardcore scene, but there are also a fair number of indie-rock and quieter artists scattered through the lineup. All of them embrace the DIY movement.
Featured bands include Poured Out, Strengthen What Remains (playing a 10-year anniversary set), Joy, Rival Choir, Ghost Key, Tigerwine, Vagabonds, Many Rooms and many, many more, performing this all-ages event held over three days. Admission is free; drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited. Get more information and a schedule online at takeholdfest.com.
BORGORE
When: 9 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $32.50 advance, $35 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
Another indication of the power of the EDM scene these days: The Grand Rapids tour stop by Israeli producer, DJ and rapper Borgore may well sell out. The 30-year-old artist describes his approach as “Gorestep,” featuring heavy metal influences and more.
Also on the bill for this “Blasphemy Tour” stop will be Spock, along with local support from S.P. Chase and Polygone. This is a 16-and-older show with doors opening at 8 p.m. Get tickets online at sectionlive.com. And speaking of EDM, another show with strong ticket sales: Thursday’s Intersection appearance by Jai Wolf, Elohim and AOBeats, $17 advance, $20 day of show.
FAREED HAQUE AND HIS FUNK BROTHERS
When: 9:30 p.m. Saturday
Admission: $5
Where: Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids
If you’ve never seen Chicago area musician Fareed Haque do his magic on guitar – or on other stringed instruments – you don’t know what you’re missing. This guy really is as billed, “a modern guitar virtuoso,” whose music has spanned jazz, prog-rock, world music, classical music and yes, funk.
He’s played with a who’s who of well-known musicians over the years, including Arturo Sandoval, Sting and many more, and he continues to teach at Northern Illinois University. Get details at foundersbrewing.com, where you can also find info about Thursday’s free show featuring Galactic Sherpas.
THE CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD
When: 8 p.m. Sunday
Tickets: $20 advance, $25 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: Congratulations to Local Spins readers Rachel Buzzita, Danielle Golisch and Jeff Sluiter. They were the first readers to email john@localspins.com with “CHRIS ROBINSON” in the message field and won a pair of tickets to Sunday night’s show. The last time The Chris Robinson Brotherhood swung by The Intersection for a Grand Rapids show, the band left folks around here buzzing about its performance. The band is touring behind its most recent studio album, “Barefoot in the Head,” released on Silver Arrow Records. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets, details online at sectionlive.com.
