Support our coverage of
West Michigan's music scene
If you love the music of the 1950s, this touring musical theater production is for you. The conceit of “Million Dollar Quartet” is a Dec. 4, 1956 recording session at Sun Studios in Memphis that put Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together in what turned out to be a one-time only jam session. The character of record producer Sam Philips appears in a narrator role. The show, nominated for three Tony Awards in 2010 for its Broadway run, features songs such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls Of Fire,” “Walk The Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Matchbox,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog” and more. Poodle skirts, saddle shoes and varsity sweaters welcome. Tickets were still available early Monday at the auditorium or online here.

When Grand Rapids’ Cosmic Knot, led by guitarist Tom Wall, released its debut album, “Inner Space,” last year, it made a musical statement unlike any other West Michigan band. The award-winning band featuring Wall, drummer Mario Copeland (Hayaman Mana Tzach), saxophonist Rolly Smith and bassist Zach Gregory will fill this intimate setting with mesmerizing, uplifting strains all evening.
Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the Monroe Avenue lot across from SpeakEZ.

WEIRD AL YANKOVIC
EMO PHILLIPS
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
So, this is being billed as a very different sort of Weird Al Yankovic show. And while it sold out quickly as Weird Al fans jumped aboard, even Yankovic himself has been quoted on Facebook as saying that this is “a change of pace” and “not for everybody … We’re scaling way, way back. No costumes, no props, no video screens, no computer servers. We’re just going to walk out on stage, sit down on stools, and play a bunch of old songs. Oh, and we’re going to be performing almost exclusively originals. The deep cuts and obscure tracks. The songs that were never hits. The ones you barely remember.”
As his website proclaims: “Nobody thought this was a good idea but he’s doing it anyway.” You’ve been warned … and it’s still liable to be an entertaining affair. Opening will be, yes, the one and only Emo Phillips.
SONS OF F.U.N.K.
When: 9:30 p.m. Saturday
Admission: Free
Where: Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids

Sons of F.U.N.K. are led by Ohioan Ricardo Lewis, who spent years performing and touring with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. The multi-instrumentalist founded this band about six years ago, describing its approach as melding funk, rock, jazz, soul and R&B.
