CRESTON SONGTELLER SESSIONS:
MEGAN DOOLEY
NICHOLAS JAMES THOMASMA
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: Creston Brewery, 1504 Plainfield Ave. NE, Grand Rapids
The third edition of this unique songwriters-in-the-round series hosted by guitarist-singer Nicholas James Thomasma will also feature the considerable talents of Kalamazoo’s Megan Dooley as well as a “special surprise guest that you won’t want to miss,” or so says Thomasma. The idea is for the performers to tell the back story of their songs, with audiences – hopefully – listening attentively.
The show is part of a busy week at Creston Brewery, with an eclectic showcase at 9 p.m. Friday featuring Wing Vilma (jazz/electronic artist who’s releasing a new recording on Friday), MCF (rap), Peace to Mateo (beat music), Eddie Logix (beat maker) and Goldzilla (rap and graphic artist), and Hawks & Owls bringing their lilting folk to the stage at 4 p.m. Sunday. Get the lowdown on Facebook here.
POSTPONED: LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
WATCHING FOR FOXES
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
UPDATE: Due to a band member’s illness, this show has been postponed. Stay tuned for an update about a date for the rescheduled show.
Some of Local Spins Wednesdays’ favorite performers return to the stage at this intimate venue this week.
Grand Rapids folk-rock band Watching for Foxes has carved out a unique space in West Michigan’s indie scene, with passionately rendered music that carries folk in a distinctive new, often atmospheric and haunting place. The band fronted by singer Joey Frendo — with Geoffrey Kartes on cello and Jared Meeuwenberg on guitar — recently wrapped up work on a new studio album, “Nostalgia in America,” that will be released later this year, so you can expect to hear some new material in this evening that marks the group’s return visit to SpeakEZ Lounge.
Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by SpeakEZ Lounge, Local Spins, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE. As always, there are Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the lot kitty-corner from SpeakEZ on Monroe Avenue NW.

Morris is in his 27th year as a member of the GRCC Music Faculty and has performed with the Grand Rapids Symphony and West Shore Symphony, and has twice been a presenter at the Latin American Music at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies. The award-winning musician also happens to be the director of the GRCC International Guitar Series.

Seattle post-grunge/alt-metal band Candlebox continues to tour behind the 2016 album, “Disappearing in Airports,” which represented the first album recorded minus founding guitarist Peter Klett. Lead singer Kevin Martin continues to lead the group’s hard rock charge.
Coldville opens the show. There’s also a special ticket four-pack available. Details, tickets online here.
CABILDO CD-RELEASE SHOW
WSG MELOPHOBIX
When: 9:30 p.m. Thursday
Admission: Free
Where: Founders Brewing Co., Grand Rapids
Cabildo has long brought the dance party via cumbia and Latin beats wherever it’s played over the past dozen years or so. But this Grand Rapids-based, nine-piece ensemble has morphed into a Latin alt-rock band that focuses on original music with a political bent – something that weaves its way throughout the group’s brand new album, “Sin Fronteras.” The energetic, music-fusing bunch will celebrate its first recording in 12 years with this show at Founders, with reggae/funk/rock’s Melophobix closing out the night. (Read more about Cabildo’s new album and listen to an in-studio performance in this recent Local Spins Artist Spotlight.)
Founders follows up Thursday’s show with another local showcase of sorts on Saturday: Ontario indie-rock, “bizarre pop” band Partner is headlining, but Grand Rapids garage punk band FLUSHED and alt-pop’s Lipstick Jodi are also on the bill for this 9:30 p.m. show, $5.
ANN ARBOR FOLK FESTIVAL:
JASON ISBELL, JOHN PRINE
JJ GREY & MOFRO, AIMEE MANN
LORI MCKENNA, THE WAR & TREATY
When: Friday-Saturday
Tickets: $100 Friday (Saturday is sold out)
Where: Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor
Of course, it’s not surprising that the 41st annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival would essentially sell out both nights of concerts. (A search early this week found a stray ticket or two available for Friday.) The lineup is certainly buzzworthy with Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, JJ Grey & Mofro, Lori McKenna and more on Friday and legendary singer-songwriter John Prine along with Aimee Mann, Mountain Heart and Birds of Chicago on Saturday. Add to that the fast-rising Michigan duo of The War & Treaty plus The Cactus Blossoms on Saturday, and Stephen Kellogg, Dead Horses and Chastity Brown on Friday and you’ve got one whale of a folk-fueled roster of stars.
Get more details online here and read more about the festival and The War & Treaty later this week at Local Spins. The performances take place in the historic Hill Auditorium on the University of Michigan campus at 825 N. University Drive in Ann Arbor. Funds raised by the festival support The Ark.
JACK DROPPERS & THE BEST INTENTIONS
When: 9 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $5
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids rock/Americana band Jack Droppers & The Best Intentions recently released a bold debut album, “I Just Wanna Play Rock & Roll With My Friends,” that shows off the band’s captivating, rootsy sound. The group, featuring Droppers Laura Hobson (of Antrim Dells), Garrett Stier (of Stationary Travelers), Devin Sullivan, Haley Sullivan, Josh Holicki and James Kessel Jr., takes “an honest, rough-around-the-edges and robust” approach.
Also on the bill for this show: Lane Ellens. Get tickets and more online here.
SWEET WATER WARBLERS
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake
When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $15
Where: Dogwood Center for Performing Arts, Fremont
When: 6 p.m. Sunday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: Salt of the Earth, Fennville
These three much-respected singers are appropriately named. The Sweet Water Warblers – May Erlewine, Lindsay Lou Rilko and Rachael Davis – unfurl the sort of musical magic that leaves audiences mesmerized and many fans with goosebumps, thanks to their impressive harmonies and congenial stage presence. Part of the Earthwork Music Collective, each of these singer-songwriters has made a mark elsewhere (May Erlewine & The Motivations, Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys, Rachael Davis Band) but when they come together for these special shows, sparks fly.
The Spring Lake and Fennville shows are sold out, but call Gary at 231-557-7687 to be put on the waiting list for the Seven Steps Up show in case tickets open up. For Salt of the Earth, the waiting list number is 269-561-7258. Get tickets and info about the Dogwood Center show online here.
Get more info about upcoming Seven Steps Up concerts online at pindropconcerts.com, where you can also find details about Saturday’s 8 p.m. show starring Charlie Mars. For info about the Salt of the Earth’s lineup, click here.
PERRIN ICE JAM:
MUSTARD PLUG
HOLLYWOOD MAKEOUT
JAKE KERSHAW, FAUXGRASS
When: 2-8 p.m. Saturday
Admission: Cash donation, food items for Kids’ Food Basket
Where: Outside Perrin Brewing, 5910 Comstock Park Drive, Comstock Park
It’s back for the second year in a row. Perrin Brewing’s Ice Jam Winter Festival kicks off with a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday and then it’s a robust lineup of live music unleashed inside a mammoth tent outside the brewery. The music starts at 3:30 p.m. with progressive bluegrass band Fauxgrass, followed by blues-rock’s Jake Kershaw, indie-rock’s Hollywood Makeout and, finally at 7 p.m., ska party-meisters Mustard Plug (who also headlined last year’s Ice Jam).
The event raises money and collects donations for Kids’ Food Basket and also serves as a preview to the upcoming WYCE Jammie Awards (Hollywood Makeout and Jake Kershaw will perform at the Jammies on Feb. 9 at The Intersection). Local Spins will also be on hand for the festivities. Details and a downloadable schedule can be found online here.
BØRNS
When: 8 p.m. Sunday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
It’s been a long time coming, but Børns is finally coming home for a concert to entertain his West Michigan fans. Raised in Grand Haven, singer and multi-instrumentalist Garrett Borns has made his home in Los Angeles the past few years while becoming an international pop star. He just released his latest album, “Blue Madonna,” and nearly every show on his current North American tour sold out.
Opening the show will be Canadian pop/electro/jazz singer Charlotte Cardin and indie-pop’s Mikky Ekko. Read more about Børns in an interview with Local Spins online here, where he talks about the influences of ’70s artists on his music and what it means to be back in West Michigan.
